I didn't know where to post this, and it's about my truck. I don't know what kind of tranny is in it. It is an '04 Chevy Regency RST with a 5 spd manual. For a while, it has made a sort of whining noise. It has 20k mi. We don't hardly drive it. I took it to have the fluid checked cause I thought maybe it was low. Guy said Its full and the color looks good. Then he showed some of it to me. As we talked, he stuck his finger in it and felt it. I think he kinda went in shock. He said Feel that. That feels like metal shavings. I would take it back now and make em fix it. So, I have an appointment Monday.
Just off the top of your head, any ideas? I dont trust anyone!! What are some things I should expect it to maybe be? A new tranny?!? (Warranty) Thank You!!!

I think since this area is specific to a particular transmission model, I'll move this over to the lounge since its not GP specific either.

To answer your question though, with only 20k miles, could it possibly be break in metals? I go through this occasionally with my customers that bring vehicles to me to service and change out the break in oil but never give any though to the manual gear box or differentials that also have break in periods.

So with that low of mileage, that would be my first thought, though that would not exactly explain the whining noise. But dont rule out any type of break in wear.

You got too many vehicles. You need to give me one or two and that would save you money on insurance.

any shavings in a trans is bad..... I can understand the gears wearing in...but the manuals use a heavy gear fluid.

when you psuh in on the clutch...does the whine go away? it is possible its the throw out bearing.....

I have gone through a few of those in my day...lol

could you post pics of the truck? I have only seen a handful of those that are manual.

I'll get one of the interior later today. We had a bad atorm last night! It hailed all over my cars while we tried to get them to safe keeping. The truck is still at the shop.
I'm thinkin the noise is there clutch in or out.

Dealer said nothing is wrong and they didn't feel any grit in the fluid. Guess I'll keep driving the hell out of it

Not real good pictures. Carbon fiber dash. Red stitching. Seats are black leather with red leather down the middle with black suede over it. And my $20 in the cup holder

That is a nice truck, and although the extended cab is nice, it would take away from the cool factor.

An '04 with 20k, somehow I dont buy it.

I would add, that since they are not finding anything at the dealership and the other place is claiming that they are, then either the other place is trying to take advantage of a female or the dealer didnt check well or is trying to play it off until the warranty expires or something. Either way, it would not hurt to drive it around the block a couple times and then try and drain some of the fluid out into a small container. You just need a few ounces. And then I would look it over yourself and if it seemed suspicious to you then I would take the sample to the dealer and if they still claim its all good but you think there's something in it, save that sample or get a little more and I'll have it analyzed for you. Either way you want a little for yourself to put away in a safe place just in case for now. A sample of the fluid as you took it to the dealer and document everything. A diary, receipts, etc. Just so your butt is covered.

    Thanks Scotty.
Yes it only has 20k mi. It only had 4k on it when we bought it a few years ago. We NEVER drive it. We bought an extended warranty too, so, looks like the dealer might be waiting a while

Sweet looking truck Lori! Hard to say what your noise is without hearing it and if warranty will cover it then you will be fine if it does need a trans.
