Seems like a normal dealership price..
looks right to me for a dealer. a week after i bought my 98 for 2000 i saw the same exact car with 15k less miles on it for close to that price.
thats why i always buy private
the nice thing about most dealers is that they put time and money into vehicles, which is why you pay more. they'll inspect it and put on new brakes/tires/glass, and do a thorough cleaning. They also provide you the opportunity to get financing and perhaps a warranty (however good or bad). Those are just some of the things that you pay for by going to a dealer versus buying private.
That doesn't mean you don't get burned, but you can get burned buying private and from a dealer. You are on the right track by doing research before you buy...when you don't is usually when you get hosed.
Good luck on the hunt!!

screw stealerships!!! keep looking in the classifieds on this site or clubgp.com im sure youll find a well maintained gp for lots less than at a stealership!! at the very least look at autotrader.com for a privatly owned one.
Dealership tried to sell 100k+ mi Daytona (blue) for about $8.9k ... We called and asked what made it so spectacular to price it well over KBB. He said the kid(aka rookie dealer) tried to slap a big price tag on it because of it's "rarity." I later saw it on ebay, it barely hit $5k to sell. I laughed, pretty hard.
Dealership originally wanted $10K for my Gp. I got them down to $8300 and $1200 trade in for my rusty Monte.
Go there and flash some cash they will lower the price.
They're not crazy, they're just trying to see what they can get. Caveat emptor.
When I traded in my car, it was immediately sold to another dealership. They're asking $8995 for a >140,000 mi 2002 GPGT.
Pay Day Auto Sales: 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix Gt 2drFINANCING AVAILABLE @ THE WINDSHIELD PRICE $8995! $6500 is the cash price!
Cant really hate on stealerships to much unless they are really shady, I got my crown vic through a small one cause they financed but i also got it at 4k below kbb
like every one else they are triing to make money
Me personally i will never finance a car again I hate hate hate car payments
I got my 04 with 48k for 7200, now your talkin about a 10 year old car with 132k now granted the car looks like its in very good condition but dealership or not thats a crazy price, Id say given the economy and the used car market(neither doin well), I think 4900 is a little more reasonable, cause you figure after taxes warrenty etc that cars gonna be more like close to 8 grand, for that kinda money you can get a newer, nicer , less mileage car for that.
You honestly think this? There are actual "honest" dealerships out there? Wow, I donno what fairytale land you come from but in the real world, thats not the case. I've looked at alot of cars in my day and let me tell ya, the whole "200 point inspection" stuff is bull**** period. If the car wasn't taken care of before, you'll easily find it when youu look it over (and I mean looking it over too). They halfass **** to them out the door as fast as they get them in, thats the honest truth. Some of the ****tiest cars i've seen were these guaranteed, inspected, certified, BS. Took probably a year to find a good TB SS that fit my requirements. Took 6 months to find my white GTP. The black one I found on accedent on a street corner private owned. It was too good to pass up.
Moral of the story, don't trust dealers and the bull**** they have to say. Look it over yourself or have some one if your not capable, don't take there word because none of them are honest. Private sold vehicles are better IMO for many reasons.....
I understand your feelings. This isn't my first rodeo. However, most of your concerns are for older, high mileage cars. I make sure that I inspect something prior to investing money into, regarldess of it's a home, car, stock, whatever.
Now take the certified pre-owned vehicles out there. The dealership (stealership according to some) are required to inspect the vehicle, and it must meet certain standards prior to selling the vehicle, and not all vehicles qualify. They do that because the manufacturer wants to provide you with a warranty beyond the new car warranty. If the manufacturer doesn't trust it's dealers, they will do something about it.
I am NOT referring to small dealers, only dealers that have a manufacturer that they've invested in (ford, chevy, bmw, etc..) NOT Iron Indian's auto sales. I will never buy something from a locally owned dealer that's not backed by a manufacturer... the support is just not there.
Yes, you generally can get a lower price vehicle in the private market, I'm not denying that. You just have to look a little harder, then you have to worry about doing all the paperwork and getting it right, the first time. Sometimes it's easy, and other times it's a PITA, depending on the state/county.
I've bought and sold vehicles to dealers and private party in multiple states, and my experience is always easier with a dealer...but that's part of what you are paying them for. You are also building a relationship within your community. Some of my best friends used to be my salesmen.
So you can win or loose either way, just do your homework, and inspect the vehicle prior to your purchase. If you can secure your own financing (not hard to do), then you can walk around and take your time and get what you want.
Ok, time to get off the soap box....
Good luck with your search!!

(To Iron Indian)
That doesn't always stand true, it's very rare you find a straight dealership that isn't trying to hack off your arm with their inflated price. The one I got my first car from (GP GT) took immaculate care of it. Routine oil changes, kept the engine bay clean as all get out, not a spot on the carpet or a tear in the seats. I never paid more than the price of replacing the ABS line after it got severed (don't ask me 'bout that) The bumper was a different story, suitcases = FTL, but it was a leasee vehicle the GT's entire "life" if you will. Heck, my leather seats didn't finally get that seam until right before I sold it. I bought it with 60k on the mileage and I think we paid roughly $8.5k for it. Did we get overcharged? Uh YEAH! But I'd never trade my first car for anything other than my GT, I still miss it (sold it last year)
Needless to say 99.9% of dealerships are crooked thieves, but the guy I dealt with my GT was real straight forward. Of course, that was after I told him he was overcharging us $800.. mostly because it was the internet price vs. lot price.
But get this, they let us take the GT home so my dad could see it. Obviously we had to leave our van for collateral, but we didn't have to sign any papers, we just took it until the next day.
Every other time I've dealt with poor dealerships, except for one and I take my vehicles to get serviced and detailed there. Last time I dealt with one I lost my truck, took a $6,000 sucker punch of a trade in, they turned around and sold it for $9.9k. I feel bad for the poor sap who bought it, the tranny was shot
Anyway, dealerships I fun to poke fun at when they think they'll get the price they list that's like $4k over KBB. It's funny.
Actully, i'm talking about cars 1-3 years old, nothing any older. As for Mileage, i'm talking about under 30k. Just because I drive old cars now doesn't mean they were never newer, My white GTP was barely 3 years old when I bought it. My TB SS was over a year old when we got it and it only had 6,500 miles on it.
And i'm telling you over a year ago when look at used newer vehicles I found several (at least 5, I know it was more than that) that half of the stuff they inspected obviously wasn't done at all. Sure there "suppose" to inspect it, do they? IMO, theres a lot of sloppy work done out there. Don't trust anything that says certified, its bull**** period. I'm no ASE certified mechanic. I'm just a homegrown garage mechanic with some common sense. Needless to say, I passed on ALOT of vehicles.
Its like saying the best mechanics are at the dealers, all I can say, around here, my ass. LOL
I am NOT referring to small dealers, only dealers that have a manufacturer that they've invested in (ford, chevy, bmw, etc..) NOT Iron Indian's auto sales. I will never buy something from a locally owned dealer that's not backed by a manufacturer... the support is just not there.
Never bought or accociated with a small dealer, I was only talking about invested dealers. Being backed by a manufacturer doesn't mean ****, been there done that.
I've bought and sold vehicles to dealers and private party in multiple states, and my experience is always easier with a dealer...but that's part of what you are paying them for. You are also building a relationship within your community. Some of my best friends used to be my salesmen.
Speaking from where I live, I'd rather have 3 sisters working in a whore house than to have a car salesmen as a friend. I've met to many bad ones around here. LOL.
Honestly, 99% car salesmen aren't trying to be you're friend or honestly give a damn about you. As long as they get there commission, thats all they care about. I don't blame them, If I was in that business, i'd be the same way. Money talks...
I don't know man, maybe it's just something with your area or experiences; everyones are different. I still speak with a lot of my salesmen, even the ones from years ago...
Just so we're clear by CPO, I'm not talkin about a random dealer certifying a car, but the dealer certifying it's own car, and providing an extended factory warranty...ie if a Porsche is to be a CPO, then it can never be sold by any other dealer other than Porsche, as well as have documented regular service, only completed by a Porsche dealer. Then the vehicle still has to meet strict guidelines in order to become certified. Yeah, I was looking at a Porsche...just seemed underpowered thanks to the 6000 ft elevation. (2004 Cayenne S)
There are places, like Carmax, that "certify" stuff, but you are correct as it holds NO weight whatsoever once you drive off the lot. That's when research and checking it out on your own comes into play.
The bottom line is of course buyer beware, but with a true CPO (certified pre owned) can give you peace of mind as you drive away with a factory backed warranty.
I was trying to avoid writing a novel, so I'll stop now.
Jesse
Everyone has their opinion, but truth be told, I'm sick of people complaining about how dealerships suck, ect.
If you're not capable enough to inspect a car before you drive away in it, then it's your fault for what happens.
In FL around my area, there are some real decent dealerships, and some as far as salesman go.. are illiterate morons.
%99 of the time if I'm on a lot, and a sales rep is trying to sell me a car, I tell them to give me the keys and I'll inspect it myself. I don't want to hear the BS story they prepared to talk me into it.
Either way, I've bought private and dealership cars, and never had a bad outcome.
I agree, but CPO or not, i've personally seen cars (CPO cars as said above) who were clearly half assed done. Its all in who works on it. Its easy to make a check mark on a list to say something is done, doing it is something else. Thats my point. Because its a CPO as well as any certified crap from any dealerships doesn't mean nothing in my book as far as piece of mine. You gotta look it over yourself with a fine tooth combo. You can't really trust anyone any more. As far as i'm concerned, nowadays there are very few good mechanics, body, and front end men around anymore.
