Just posted the old stereo from my truck on Craigslist. Wasn't up more than 5 minutes before a I got a text reply asking if it was still available. Copied and pasted from another website, but it describes exactly what happened to me:

Yesterday I had posted an ad to Craigslist and it didn't take long for the vulture's to start circling lol. I received a text from 908-956-7881 saying they were interested in the items I posted and asked how much for them. After I gave them the price they went into a speech about how they want to verify my ad and make sure that it wasn't a scam. I replied that they could do whatever they needed to to verify it wasn't a scam. That's when they informed me that they will run it through Craigslist and that I should be getting a five digit code that I will need to then text to them so the ad can be verified.

****************DO NOT GIVE THEM THIS CODE**************

From what I have been able to find out is they use this code to register their phone and attach it to your Craigslist account so they can post ads and scam other people. If you have heard of this scam and know more about it please feel free to update this topic. I knew there was something wrong with this reply because the texts were written in such poor and broken english. They never once tried to talk me down on the price and they really really wanted that code. They talked more about getting the code then anything else and it was imperative that I get that code to them and as fast as I could and that it was correct. I did mess with them and I gave them 2 wrong codes but that didn't deter them at all. They would just have an automated system re-send me the code lol. Like I said if you know what this scam is all about please reply to this topic because I as well as others would like to know what this code is all about. I hope no one finds out the hard way and that post has kept someone from finding out what happens if these codes are given out. Thank you for reading this and good luck to all.
They quit replying after I sent them the link to that text...

Christ I just put my car for sale on CL and within 10 minutes got 2 emails full of broken english that are obviously scammers. For example:

    "
I am so much interested in purchasing your item and I will be paying you with a certified cashiers check and wait till it clears before pick up by my movers? Let me know if this works for you.

I will need you to provide me with your full name and address where will the check will be mailed to."

I just mark it as spam then delete it. Pretty crazy that people actually fall for these things though.

I usually get a text asking me to email their wife, girlfriend, etc instead of directly emailing me through CL.... Delete and block
Next it is the I need to verify you please enter the code..... Delete and block
Or it is the I am using Google voice and will call you, please enter two digits... Delete and block
If you are asking to pay by check....
If you tell me you are paying more than the asking price.....

If I am not busy I will google their area code and may or may not post a local ad there requesting male adult pics or a super cheap electronic to keep them busy for a while....

I don't really know what it's all about but I got the same thing I just deleted their text as soon as I got it I knew it was some type of B/S......
A lot of times they don't even mention the item I'm selling they just say your item.
