Daughter called and was backing up and heard a pop and steering went super hard. They were able to drive it home but no power steering. I have not looked at it yet. But wonder what to look for. It has fluid in it and no leaks. Sounds like the pump went bad or something in it broke.

Any ideas what to look for.m are appreciated.

Sounds like the shaft on the PS pump broke.

Reading on the internet that sounds like it might be. Is that as easy as buying a new pump ant put it on? Lots of pumps on rock auto.

best have her make sure the belt is still turning, cause busted shaft means the pulley is laying free and the belt is now off, or wrapped up and took out other stuff with it.

your gonna need a gm p/s pulley puller/installer as well.

I'll try to take a look at it tomorrow. When she was FaceTimeing me the belt was still on and turning. She drove it home 15 miles w hard steering and didn't say it overheated or make a bunch of noise.
Can the shaft break and the pulpy magically stay on?

Should be a fun one to dive into.

the busted shaft might be broken inside the housing just enough to keep the pulley in place somewhat.

mine busted while snow plowing, pulley and belt came off asap. no steering, or brakes in my case due to hydro boost brakes. i left the plow in the lot i was plowing, and drove it home with no belt at all. lucky for me it was way below freezing out. didnt even come close to over heating.

I'd bet it's broken at the impeller, so likely the reason why the belt/pulley is still on it.

If I pull on the pulley I can get it to move out. So I think your right fordman.

Can you reuse the pulley or should I just get a new one also?

the tool is like 30 bucks, but you can do the free rental at most parts stores. needs to be a gm power steering pulley installer/ remover.

If you get one from a junkyard they include the pulley, and they are usually only like 40 bucks no core. I tend to have better luck with the junkyard units that the remans.

Amazon shipped me a new acdelco pump for $119 today. So I will give the install a go tomorrow. Drove it tonight to get ready. Boy you have to think about your turning with our power steering, and put some effort into it. Actually seemed a lot more harder than old manual steering.

Looks like mine has the variable valve electronic control steering. Hopefully that part will transfer over to the new pump.

Well got back to it this afternoon. The shaft was snapped of in deep. Which saved the pulley from flying around and wrecking stuff.

I did not want to monkey with the EVO valve so I bought a new plain high pressure hose and hooked it all up. Fl

Flush it a bit (not a 1 man job messy)and filled it up turned lock to lock a bunch and all seems great.

Good deal. Looks like it's back on the road again. Not the first pump shaft I've seen like that. Not sure what causes it but like you said at least it didn't come loose and take out a bunch of other stuff. Not a bad price on the pump either.
