Thread: Fix the car or pocket the cash?

So i got rear ended a week ago, it left two holes from the license plate bolts and a little bit of scuffed paint. Hard to notice unless you look.
Insurance sent me a check, for about a thousand dollars. i can get it fixed or pocket the cash, i just moved so $ is tight.

Car is a 15 so its new and has a note, but damage isnt bad enough to really affect that.

I can probably use some epoxy and fix the holes.

Keep the money. See what you can do yourself to try and save the most money. Maybe take some bonds or something and fill in the holes? Or sand off the scuffed area and repaint it yourself?

I mean it's your decision rather you wanna go ahead and fix it with what they gave you or just pocket it and keeping on driving it

If there really is no extremely noticeable damage and you can live with what is damaged.....its a no brainer!

can you fill two bolt hole sized holes with bondo?
Think the car loan holder will do anything?

Pics of said damage? I would never use bondo on a bumper ever either. You need to use something that flexes.

Bondo was the only patching stuff that came to mind lol. I know there'e better stuff out there, but that's what hit me first.

Although I think Bondo makes a product designed for repairing bumpers.

There are many flexible fillers on the market.. I've had great luck with the Evercoat premium stuff.. sands super easy and really flexes.

We used the normal Evercoat 5 gallon buckets at a time in high school lol.

A little flexible filler and a some rattle can DupliColor and it would be hard to see that small damage. I would put that check in the bank.

As far as will the lender care... see your contract. Maybe.

As far as the next time you get hit and haven't fixed it- insurance man will say "Can't pay, you already needed a bumper."

I've been hit there twice in the last year in the 99 GTP. First- ins pay $619. Second- Dude handed me $400. Same bumper, which was faded on top to begin with. Pocketed all that by just keeping it black and shiny. It has just a tiny rip now and might go another round.

I don't recommend putting bondo there. If you want a proper fix you'll need access to the backside. Plastic welding could work with little need for filler.

If I were you, heres what I would do: Get behind there and push the plastic back into the holes, it looks like its probably all still there just shoved through. Clean off all the marks with polish and trim off any shaggy stuff. Touch up whatever isn't white or won't rub off. Keep driving. Not an invisible repair but works for me.

If there are actually holes in the bumper with chunks gone, you'll need a pro-type repair with no steps skipped or it will show up visibly later on.

i found a bumper on Rock auto, 250 at my door, have maco paint it, Im still several hundred ahead.
