    not sure about that, back in the day they just stuck the tube in the pipe, no rollers to test it at speed. it was always high co or something like that. those screws always made it pass. then id just open em back up where they were.

    being your failing under power the carb maybe f ed up and need a rebuild.

    i always liked the Q jet too. nice small primary flaps, ( great for normal driving) then the huge secondary's that just dump fuel in the intake lol and rebuild rather easy too.

    I'll keep an ear to the ground. Take the time to read that though, its not very long nor is it terribly specific. It answers your Scott question. At no time during the test should secondaries open, unless thats a helluva load test! You're on almost all primary jets with a fairly insignificant trickle from the idle circuit, going 30-35 mph.

    lol i was referring to just how the quadra bog works. its some what economical until you floor it.

    New plugs and wires in. Can't really tell if it made a huge difference with the cheesy exhaust. Seems a little stronger once warmed up. Maybe.

    Old plugs looked decent, I guess. They smelled like stale gas, like varnish (?). You carburetor guys know what I'm talking about. They were gaped at 0.035". According to what I found, that was kind of tight so I gaped the new ones at 0.045".

    Well step one is FINALLY complete.

    We got some cold air here in Tucson, so I figured now would be the perfect time for a re-test. On the way there I added just under two gallons of E85 to a half tank of regular. Then I hooted on it pretty good to get it all warmed up. I pulled on to the rollers fully expecting to fail. I was stoked when the guy said I passed. Looking at the results, I passed by a LOT. I smiled the whole way home.

    So it looks like some key factors are:
    New plugs
    New wires
    Cold air

    and the secret to success.....

    E85! (Now I just have to drive it a lot tomorrow to get that alcohol out of the tank)

    Now to find time to go to the DMV.

    Spent an hour waiting at the DMV this afternoon. Wasn't sure they were going to call my number before the clock struck 5, but I made it. By the skin of my teeth too. 4:52 I get called up. Laid all my papers out on the counter. Two "yes ma'am"'s and a "thank you" later, I was outta there with my Arizona plate. Now I can relax for the next 11-1/2 months.

    This plate is only temporary. The personalized one should arrive in 6-8 weeks.

    The old square bodies aren't exactly rare out here. Fairly common, in fact. However, they seem to all be 2wd's. An all stock 4wd in decent condition does kind of stand out.

    I snapped some interior pictured the other day:









    From what I understand, grandpa replaced the original bench with the buckets for better comfort on the long drive to and from Florida. I have to say, these are by far the most uncomfortable seats I have ever sat in. Maybe it's because of the high back, and they can't really go back far enough? Maybe they would be fine in something else. Just not a standard cab. I'm currently seeking a factory bench to put back in. That way, the wife can slide right up next to me.


    And nobody knows why (or thought to ask before he passed) but grandpa put this Rolls Royce thing on the key ring. I'm leaving it on, out of respect for him. Plus, it's cool enough.

    Installed a tach-O-meter this afternoon.





    Iv'e had three square bodies in my lifetime, and all three have gotten this same redneck tach install. Not race car stuff by any means, but I think it's essential to know how fast the engine is turning.

    It's functional but still needs the back light wire hooked up. There's only one spot in the fuse block for INST LMPS, and it's being used by something else. By the time I got back from O'Reilley's with the add a fuse it was dark, and I was done for the day.

    I had forgotten how simple the electrical systems are on these...

    iirc the manual trucks got a tack where the gas is. gas went into the little round blank hole. how my 77 was, and my brothers 85.

    brick in the wind i used to call mine. cause it is just that lol

    headers help out a ton, has a set on my 77. its nice when theres room to work in too.

    I'm not even sure about that. I wouldn't be surprised if the tach was only available in the higher trim level manuals. The Custom Deluxe manual trucks may have still had the jumbo fuel gauge. I need to learn more square body history.

    Honestly, even if I only gain a bit of power and no mileage, that's fine with me. I'm really looking for a better sound. No sense in having a small block V8 if you can't hear it. Plus the rattling of the current exhaust is killing me.

    ^^^ It's so hard to tell anymore. These trucks are old enough, most have been modified. Who knows for sure?...

    I've put on a bunch of overtime in the last couple of days. Headers and mufflers have been ordered. Plus some other odds and ends.

    Iv'e done a fair bit of research. Loud/aggressive is kinda what I'm going for.

    From what I gather, they are pretty docile at idle and under moderate acceleration, but really growl when you get on it. They say an H-pipe helps tone down the noise at idle and cruise. As long as the mufflers are behind the cab, the drone shouldn't be too unbearable. We'll see. It's a truck, after all.

    I'm just hoping for anything other than the tinny rattle of the current setup.
