bill and others known of this thing forever...and its been 14 years so far since two nuts with a free trofeo and steel hacked it together...well the two new powerplants and his wife killing me if Al kills himself have us looking to up the game for the next 30 years it'll take to finish it

so its off to Wally Stroupe in NC to recieve a nice chromoly junglegym in about another week and a half...

here's hoping we can get the car to a 3800lb raceweight

this is the last youll see of alot of that oem tin and free steel/trofeo junk we hacked together years back

one of the things is that while for the most part the front 2/3rds is a conventional chassis he's built hundreds of times, albeit with our front rails wider than a typical rwd to clear the 3800/4t80e.
he also has to build for adjustable caster/camber since we do plan on seeing how the on demand over/under-steer is...

the main thing here is that the original wrecked...twice. this car will not have that problem.
he did want me to give him a rough idea of what we need for the removable rear subframe to fit the 3800 and 4t80e. it is intended to be a complete powertrain module, PCM, wiring, cooling system, all of it.
disconnect the fuel lines, primary power, and we can lift the body up 3 feet for plenty of room to service any major components we cant get to with the removable tubs and rear firewall service hatch.

plus he has to fit 295 50 16's at all 4 corners for the street rubber...
the good thing is that the rear subframe ends up bolting to where the standard rwd 4 link bars link too.

plus theres that whole, build it once, build it right, deal...we get to refine it for the next 30 years
    enjoy my scribbles

sweet DIY CC plates bro...the other part of this is an additional "layback" to move the strut rod centerline 6" closer together than OEM...need room for massive wrinkly black things at each end for the strip

the original twin engine Hurst "Hairy" olds wrecked twice, it was an exhibition car based off the twin engine toronado but using the 66 (rebodied as 67 after first wreck) 442.

we had a nice 8 point setup that we added in to reinforce everything, it was always a slightly scary handfull, but after years and years we finally figured out what we really wanted from the car in terms of the packaging. having the two new drivetrains and having to rework our rear chassis at that point meant we could go one of two routes...we chose the one where his old lady is less likely to kill me if he doesnt walk away from a wreck.

we've only had 2 close calls, both times doing stupid ****...but the chassis without the rear subframe did flex a fair bit. she was heavy too, we wend overboard on the steel...but hey it was free lol. we've modified enough stuff over the years that it did look quite hacked together, nevermind that we did most of the chassis work over the weekends in a driveway...where he had to drive it to work on monday.

    cause racecar

Funniest part of this thing has always been that it was his freaking daily. "We did this this and that.. he can still get to work."

    doin work on the 442

3.25" studs, NOS Timken bearings (pre china, aka correct dia wheel stud knurl-these are for NON ABS gm FWD), stainless bearing spacers ( oem type lower ball joint grease shield, and sweet air cooling duct mounting ear), and the Dorman steel knuckles are assembled, struts are ready, gotta find 90mm UHL 16x2mm shouldered bolts for our clamp plates (they will eventually be welded to the struts once final knuckle/strut angle is figured on...

mr stroupe has tons of mockup parts, for everything...but we sorta gotta supply a 4t80e...he doesn't have one...go figure, going to junkyard today to get the side cover, maybe another rear chain sprocket thrust bearing...that way i have two large bearings for use with 2.5" coilovers (god i love the 4t80e)

JUST barely clear the 1st gen strut lol, a piece of paper gets caught lol

4 of these buggers... 295 50 16, from my figuring we should have full turning radius with the narrower rails and front wheel tubs, with the rear made to clear even bigger

as you can see they fit, and with the knuckles tucked in with some sweet LCA's and the canted struts, we should have plenty of room to go to a 12" front slick as long as we dont turn sharply

after getting the side cover off, i figured out how to remove that rear sprocket bearing with just a ball peen hammer and prybar. less than 10 minutes.

the TR will now have nice buttery smooth steering up front, fer freeeeeee

test cut the CC plates, it looks like it'll possibly work better for the 442 for it to be inverted, but we shall see. found a spherical bearing for us thats 2" OD and should let us have fun for a long time with no worries...it amazing how low the thrust rating is of "std" cc plate bearings...but i understand space constraints.

plus i sorta designed these to work with the W strut tower and tilt the strut inboard nearly 2 inches each side even the fattest rubber will clear even a 12" spring on the front.

what ya thought i wasnt gonna shoot for killing two birds with one stone? lol

plus while the better option out there... the zzp upper mounts seem hokey with two 1" welds holding the thing together. and it is the ****ty oem geometry setup for giant springs...which you no longer have.

    but why stay stock? amirite?

shoot i know zzp's LCA's have enough room on the ball joint tabs to move em inboard but **** at leasst just ditch the oem bearing spacer/abs connector tab and you gain about .060 fender lip clearance increase...hahaha

    i are tired.
442's in capable hands. he's done more than a few first gen W's...

pushed it off the trailer and turned and burned lol

got to see steve at legends new car and its new body as we dropped off the pile of 2nd gen W parts and parts ive made up so far for the trans plates/CC plates, etc.

that body is sooo nice, would make **** sooo much simpler to work on if we could have a fiberglass flopper body on the 442

    pile of parts/mounts/etc.

cabin will be pretty standard afair for the most part aside from more interior room due to lack of longitudinal trans/driveshaft. we only have to fit an 8" dia resonator/muffler.

our body isnt getting chopped or anything so it wont be built with the drivers ass 2" off the ground either

the front is almost the easy part, front and rear 3800/80e combo's have 3/8ths motor plates at each corner so all mounting will be identical front to rear with adjustment for axle centerline changes. and of course its being built more like a pro touring car in some regards with the additional bracing.

good news is since its just a shell the rusty drivers rocker panel is no problem...its getting cut out anyways

he said he was looking for a challenge and its now mostly his headache now.
and i quote "its gonna be light as hell"

im taking a shower and going to bed

Legit stuff. I think that's the first time i've ever seen double stacked IC's and a spacer. I can only image the length of those bolts going from the blower all the way down to the LIM.

Wouldn't the double stack IC core be more of a restriction at that point?

on the bottom a highly modified g3 wbs IC, mod'd to single pass/gen 5 with diverter tongue and post core BBV
zzps2 not modified yet but got it cheap since they didnt rtv it worth a **** and it has vac leaks like a sieve....this is the 3rd zzp core ive found not sealed properly, but hey, got it cheap.
    ssic on top
found a company down south of here Metric and multistandard, 1 meter lengths of ss m8x1.25 all thread for 6$ each. i bought 4 sticks lol studs are better clamping anyways....

positive displacement blower, most pressure drop would be from cooling/condensing of the air, its was tossed together fer tha hell of it... looks wicked wouldnt need it with the single pass core (2 3/4" inlets 2 3/4" out) one thing i want to do is a plenum spacer with a tongue above the core to allow for more even airflow with the blower small discharge triangle and 30* discharge angle.

been busy making parts for the new chassis.
strut layback plates/reinforcements to let us angle the strut back for the fat meats. slot the upper, clamp at angle, weld to strut, done.

caster camber plate spherical bearing mounting cup/plate
    a
better idea of the size slapped on the TR's intense CO's the adaptor bushings are being machined shortly.

cutout the LCA tabs out of .190 and 125 for 3/4 fk heims. been cutting tons of lightweight 10-32 tabs for the hairy glass, nice stainless wide low head Philips screws, small and larger tabs for doors and rear. also made up some weld nut tabs in 1/4-20 for the removable wheel wells and to replace the OEM M6 mounting points.
each corner should be good to 42k lbs weight with the upper strut mount made to handle 52k. Mr Stroupe said it best "yall building a tank" lol
in the left of center you can see the adjustable feet for the 65e stator support brace im working on. that bugger sits on top of the reverse band pin boss, more on that thing sometime in the future.

finally managed to snag a couple deals on Clist for our heaps. met a real nice fella, Ed, a "retired racer" some sweet **** in his garage
picked up a steal of a deal on
2 heli latches, charging posts, helmet and steering wheel hooks, 4" prowerks fill cap for the icebox, sweet alum steering wheel/disconnect with a switch...and a dial in board...
i kinda wanna use the steering wheel in the cressida since it looks sorta like some of the older jap stuff
probably shoulda bought the hotside bends i need...but ya cant pass up the deals when they roll through...

    quality takes time
    and cubic doll hairs

8x 3/4 lh FK rod ends inside allstar double adjusters (3/4 lh x 1 1/8 12 rh) for the inner control arm to chassis.
if your wondering why...those will let us move the hub/bearing inboard up to an inch in the future if we decide to stretch the rear fenders for cheaper 16x16 slicks (looks like 14" is our limit without stretching the haunches)
you also can see one of the casters that are for the removable rear powerplant cradle, the chassis will have 4 short vertical tubes for these puppies to pop into so we can lift the chassis off and wheel the powertrain out.
    easy peasy.

and now we come to the 2nd gen knuckle side of things...
4 outer lower ball joints, 3/4 x 7/8ths shank, waiting on the tube bungs
took a bit of work but i did find the metric GM circle track stuff works perfectly with our spindles.
so we ordered 4 UB machine adjustable height metric lower uniball pins for 3/4" eye heims. as well as two metric gm adjustable tie rod end pins for the rear two knuckles.

in the pic is the LH and RH thread 3/4" hardware for the rear tie rods/toe bars, one is next to the lower joints so you can see the size difference.
the front will use the OEM rack with the existing Moog 1st gen inners and 2nd gen outers with the heim lower.

all 4 corners will have identical setups allowing for easy carrying of spare parts/replacement.
so yeah, you might say its built like a tank...

.125" chromoly steering rack mounts are done, snagged a crapload of alum 10-32 nyloc nuts for all the window hardware. 6$ each for the 1 1/8" x 12 jam nuts...x8 lol all of em just for the inner LCA joints.
the 1" billet CC swashplates are cut, going to make a 1/2" set as well, had the forsight to have a 3/8ths square cut for easy adjustment with a ratchet from either above or below, whichever is easier. just for the 12 1/2-13 bolts its nearly 12$, nylocs only slightly less...**** adds up fast!
the thicker 1/4-20 weldnut tabs are to let us remove the last vestiges of M6 hardware in the car, working on 5/16ths weldnut tabs for the next parts shipment.

the inner LCA heim spacers are setup for 1/4" on each side but with a bunch of spares at 5/16ths and 3/16ths so that we can angle the arms for a far more favorable anti dive/rise front geometry with the opposite for the rear. though the traction bars should remove the need to do so on the rear. regardless the adjustment range is there for us to try anything to make it hook and go straight.

just have to turn out the upper strut/hat to pillow ball sleeves and the LCA double adjuster sleeves and a few heavy boxes are getting shipped to Wally.

right now i am working on a billet alum front rad crossmember much like my waGN's with a replaceable airdam as well as formed alum braces for the rear window to drop more weight off the upper chassis. the doors are nearly done at Hairy Glass, windows are in process

everything above the axle/hub centerlines we're cutting every gram, everything below we aren't too worried about as it helps us cancel out the effect of the weight above. even the radiators and cooling modules are going to be laid down to keep weght down low...the only exception is the suspension.

id post pics of the new batch of parts but its just brackets n boxes/bags of hardware lol

took a bit but finished 2 parts, have the third custom bushing still to make (strut rod to upper uniball)
custom heim spacers, built with 1/4" but 3/16ths and 5/16ths are also made to allow for angling of the LCA's for toying with anti dive/rise geometry. they also reduce the 3/4 heims to 1/2"-20 NAS bolts.

the 1 1/8-12 threaded female sleeves for the LCA double adjusters are hewn from a billet piece of 1.5" 4130....its tough looking at most of your 88$ get dumped into a scrap barrel lol

went out to Al's to sort through everything and inventory what we still need (still waiting on UB machine for our damn metric GM uniball studs)
sooo much hardware...i cutout a mockup of a 28x12 slick (13.5 to account for sidewall) and laid out the hub and lower ball joint centerline...
had it laid out nice for a pic...destroyed by a 3 yo wrecking machine named Gianna in 10.5 seconds....
this is what i get for thinking a 4$ box of 50 washers would keep her busy for at least a minute..... nope
just need the upper strut bushing done and we can ship 3 50lb boxes down to NC
