Went to the junkyard in the Big D after work today w/a buddy. He needed a head for his 3.4 Montana, I had no intention of doing anything but helping him. Well we all know how that work. As luck would have it fortune smiled on me brother.
Manual regulators
Ran across a 98 exploder. Pulled these off.
Look closer, you all will like it. I promise. LOL
All in all I spent around $90. Probably saved around $350 opposed to buying off craigslist.
Junkyards FTMFW
On a side note I sold my wheels, another goodie on the way.
Today was a good day.
Ok, they are rusty so I'll spill. Explorers were able to get the 5.0 pushrod engine. These engines came w/the gt40 top end, much the same as the cobras. The later models got what they called the 4 Bar casting, better known as the GT40 P. These heads are "non emissions" and make the most power of all the stock production heads available for the small block windsor. The casting code on the heads says "GTP"
I figured those where gt40 heads when you said you got them off an explorer
Bit more progress today. Cruise control removed. Tomorrow I'll cap off the intake and remove the rest of all the vacuum crap.
Heads degreased twice. I'm going to take them to my uncle's, he has the tools to magnaflux, check the seat pressure and lap the valves.
might want to change the spark plugs too lol
Not much going on, waiting on the IRS to fund the project some more.
Blasted and painted the radiator brackets at work last night.
Cleaned some wires from the harness that weren't being used. Started to rid the car of the kill switch the previous owner put in but my soldering iron took a dump on me.
Cage has been ordered, should be here in 3 weeks or so. I ended up stepping up to a moly cage. Going to tack it into place and paying someone to tig it in the rest of the way.
Man your really putting some time and effort into this fox! It otta be a real nice car when your finished.
Back in the day I had a 5 liter Capri rs.
Love these cars.
Cage just arrived in all its chrome-moly glory. lol. Probably pick up my way overpriced subframe connectors next week and hopefully get it started. Found someone to weld the cage, I'm just going to tack it into place.
Nice progress! What are your plans as far as an ET you're looking for?
I have a 86 GT with ported 69 351 windsors/TFS Stage 1 Cam/Cobra intake and 16psi from a Vortech S-Trim. They sure are fun cars and fairly cheap to make fast. I havent had mine to the track yet but with the stock heads and cam with 12psi I made 369RWHP and 380rwtq, im hoping with the new setup im hovering around the 500rwhp mark.
Hopefully it turns out decent. I lack what is referred to as "mad skills." Also it's very slow going as my schedule is pretty busy for the time being.
Capris are cool, was yours a bubble hatch?
Yeah these are definately love or hate cars
Thanks, I appreciate it. Ultimately and realistically I'll be happy to run 9.50's on pump.
Yeah the whole idea of getting rid of my 03 was to have some "cheap" fun. lol. I actually laughed on the ride home after I bought it because of how little top end these cars have stock(ish).
Did you leave the heads alone? I'm pretty sure you lose nearly 2 pts of compression when you put 351 heads on a 302, I suppose thats where boost comes in handy though. Post a pic of the GT, foxes need love too. lol
9.50's will make for a fun car for sure!
They do lack in the upper RPM range lol. The heads have been ported to a 1262 and upgraded springs. The loss of compression doesn't bother me with the boost, im actually able to run a little more timing so its not a slug down low.
Heres a couple pics of mine.
