I just bought a 99 gtp off the original owner she is 70 had a stroke unable to drive. The car has 50k miles on it never smoked in its super clean i give 1000$ for it. I never knew it sit up the street from me in the ladies garage. This is my first grand prix i have had several muscle cars and own a ctsv but im really enjoying the gtp i would like to learn more about production numbers and limited models.

Several hundred thousand grand prix's were made. Not sure you'll ever find exact numbers for each trim though.

1998 had like 1500 in that special blue paint.
2000 had around the same number daytona edition models.
2001 had the special edition models with several paint colors like red, silver, black. They came stock with the hood, rear spoiler and roof rails. The daytona edition car had the same features.
2002 had the 40th aniversary edition editon in the purple color.
2003 had roughly 8,000 limited edition models with a few extra features and spoiler.

SLP performance made several GTX cars that could be bought and are pretty rare to find.

2004 made ~15,000 comp-g editions and 2005 with ~17,000 or so. I forget the numbers off hand.

Exhaust, pulley drop, fuel pump rewire, home made intake and a tune is pretty much what you'd need for 13's if you can get traction. If you own a tuner you are one step ahead, barely any shops mess with 3800's or even know how to tune them well though as they so basic compared to anything LS related.

Then pray the stock transmission doesn't grenade on you. Even at 50,000 miles it will still fail the same way they all do with extra power. Some make it forever on stock units and others don't.

Luckily there are a couple really good ls tuners in my area they done my ctsV and theres a shop that builds grand nationals. I appreciate the advise. I may have the trans gone thru and a shift kit installed to be safe. I have a lift so it makes it a little easier getting to things on it. I was going to do the u bend delete and cat delete. I want to keep it some what quiet. Will i need to have the cat codes pulled out of the ecm? Or will i not have to worry about it as long as i leave the O2 sensors.

I stick with the 195. But have not modded any of mine. And live in Minnesota and like heat.

I ordered an o.e replacement thermostat when getting coolant and the give me a 180. Does the 3800 have intake gasket problems like the 3.1 and 3.4s

And cheap coolant elbows to the heater. Get new ones because as soon as you touch them they will break. Use factory or aluminum elbows and clean the holes well.

Dexcool wasn't reformulated until sometime in 2005, so it's possible. The coolant elbows are another common leak. You'll need to spend money on the trans.

I appreciate the info. I looked up the elbows i found aluminum elbows on zzp i ordered them this morning. Im suprised it doesnt look like performance parts are outrageously priced for it. With the trans you think a cooler with a shift kit would hold up for awhile since its so low miles its just now 50k its never been run hard. Im not planning on beating on it all the time. I want to get it dialed un and have a good running cruiser

I found where the 05 number is from. It was a guess based on the number of CompG's available the previous year (%14). The 05 CompG wasn't available for at least half of that year, so the number's lower. There was a number from GPONA of something like 3,701 CompG's made it off the line in 2005. That number could be way off too, obviously.

    From ClubGP ~

    For 2004

    There were 131,551 GP sold

    GT1: 27%
    GT2: 52%
    GTP: 7%
    Comp G: 14% Giving us a total of 18,417 Comp G's Sold in 2004

    For 2005

    There were 122,398 GP sold

This is all the info I have for 2005 but if we use the 14% number that would give us a total of 17,136 Comp G's Sold in 2005

Back on topic, Jon. Not everything's expensive until you get to the hptuner stuff, lol.

U-bend delete and cat delete aren't worth it because you still have the small 2.25in downpipe. Just buy a 3in downpipe that removes both and you gain performance.

You can remove the rear o2 sensor on 97-00 cars, then have a tuner remove the bank 1 sensor 2 codes.

Monitor transmission temps before investing in a cooler. I never needed one in my car, I could beat on it and still never see over 200º, cruising on the freeway during summer it was 150-180º with no problems and that's the ideal temp they should run at.

If parts are going to break in the stock transmission is from doing one of a few things, full throttle 1-2 shifts (when lots of extra power added), the 3-1 downshift and the 4-2 or 4-1 downshift as that super abrupt change in torque can snap the input shaft in two. A few other things could happen but if you drive it normal and have fun with it in a good way it should last a while.

I ordered the aeroforce interceptor gauge today. By what i was reading on it i will be able to monitor the trans temps with it. I went ahead and ordered the 3 inch exhaust with the down pipe. My wifes ready to kill me lol ive not had it a week and ive ordered all this stuff but i really like the car. What tuner would you guys recommend.

3in full exhaust will just be for sound FYI, stock cat-back flows fine untill 300+ whp. Hopefully you don't mind the drone or that is has a large resonator to soak up the sound. Heck even cancel it if you want to save money.

I use HP Tuners, the other option is DHP Tuner. DHP is around $250 but it can only do 3100, 3400 and 3800 powered cars, HP Tuners is $500-650 depending on package but can tune hundreds of different cars from GM/Ford/Dodge/Mercedes.

3-1 at 39 is what snapped my forward apply band. Also full throttle in 4th on a stock 01 trans will make 4th into a machined smooth second neutral....I may or may not have stripped a 4th gear to nothing at about 130, probably shouldn't drive that fast anyway.

4t65e is made of glass for sure in stock form.
