    Yes, it's true, most of the recall work that we have done on our beloved GTP's is being done via shortcut! One example is I recently got a recall notice in the mail for 07035 engine compartment fire. Well, this translates into the dealer of your choice having to do a complete valve cover gasket replacement. However, this is not what MOST dealers are doing. Most of them are simply building a cheap aftermarket "shield". This makes no sense to me because they are being paid for parts & labor 100% from GM!
    Having said that, let me tell u some things about the mechanics world that u probably already knew but never had confirmation. I was married to a mechanic for 8 yrs. whenever warranty or recall work comes in the mechanics are HIGHLY pressured to do "suggestive selling", try their hardest to find something, anything else wrong with your car so they can sell u 150% marked up parts & $74/hour labor of which the machanic only receives 8-$11/hr plus around 20% commission.
    Back to my recall. I live in NC & in the entire piedmont/triad area which is around 7 cities & a few towns in the CPU try, 5 counties. In all of this area there was only 1 dealership that actually REPLACED WITH A BRAND NEW valve cover gasket & didn't try to build some cheap shield around it instead. Also, they never once tried to sell me any additional work. I feel that these other dealers should be punished by GM for fraud & embezzling the money & made to correct every GTP they have shamed!!

    Common business practices aren't "fraud & embezzling". ANY business you go to will generally try to up sell a product, some may be doing it without you knowing it.

    Can you in any way prove that a shield is not a GM Dealer fix? It seems adequate to me.

    What you fail to mention is most mechanics are basically paid to be speed workers. Meaning that jobs are paid in number of hours expected, not what it takes to do the job. There's also two labor guides, one for warranty and one for non-warranty. An engine swap w/o warranty may pay 10 hours, in the warranty book it's likely paying only 6 hours. The system put in place by someone that doesn't work on cars is driving these guys to find as many shortcuts and methods to do work faster than the engineers say it can be done.

    I've yet to see anyone put a shield on a 3800 that stops oil from burning off the manifold. If you have problems, call the GM 800 number and be a reasonable person.

    dealers suck balls end of story, most every one i know who had a warranty got hosed by 1/2 ass'd work, including myself many times over.

    and the dealer ship and mechanic both get paid for warranty work from GM. its not like they dont get paid and are out to do a short cut. most of the dealer mechanics just flat out suck. ASE certified, what a joke that is.

    I used to work at a GM dealer working on cars to pay the bills while going to college. The warranty pay system is screwed up and causes problems like these posts above. There are some mechanics that find ways to use the GM warranty system to get paid for the correct amount of hours, but many do just short cut the work. Much of this comes from the mentality of the shop manager and shop foreman. Most of the guys where I worked just hustled and worked the labor op system to get the right amount of hours for doing the job right. Sometimes a new guy would start and you could quickly tell how the previous shop they worked at was run. Some got better, but many just got run off.

    Going to GM is important. Your car should be fixed right. GM needs to know if dealers are truly shortcutting a process and not performing the repairs correctly. They have reps that visit dealers and these reps can make a difference, but they don't see everything going on. A call to GM gives them information they need to push for changes.

    i called GM on my dealer, they were more then pissed off at me. in the end i got a new transfer case in my truck, they epoxied a hole in it and called it good. i saw the patch and flipped out on them, i got no where at the dealer so called GM. ( they denied they did this, yet they rebuilt it)

    at the time it was in the shop i had 40 miles left on my warranty, i was getting the trans replaced this time after 2 failed rebuilds, the t case rebuilt, and the rear end locker replaced.

    oh and they scratched the crap out of the side of my truck, also denied that, i got nothing for it.


    this is quality work right? and it was leaking with in 6 months. if i had not seen this the day i picked it up they would have just let this go as a good repair ( hey we will never see this guy again deal)

    that does sound bad. mr transmission stocks a plate that can be inserted into the t-case to repair the wear hole caused by the pump. its a lot cheaper than buying a case half is you need one in the future. regarding gm warranty times...they are approx. 50% of the true flat rate time...so yes the mechanic is getting paid but at half of his/her normal wage. ASE certification is nation wide not dealer specific.

    I'd post the picture and explain to GM what you expected from recall repairs, the place you went to, and show them picture showing you got what amounted to a cheap band-aid fix.

    It's no different than a doctor who slaps a band-aid on a patient, then billing his insurance for X-Ray, CT scan, EKG, EGG, urologists, head shrink, 20 different kinds of medicine, and 8 hours of labor with assorted nurses and doctors. If the repair you got is not what GM was offering, then the stealership doing the sloppy job cutting corners can be denied future repair services due to safety issues and fraud, and even lose the right to be a GM service.

    i called GM ratted then the F out. i got a brand new t case installed for free. the manager was less then pleased that i called GM, he even said you know, you didnt have to call GM...i told him flat out, you guys denied the patch job was done by you, and you were doing nothing for me, so i called GM, you tied my hands.

    Wow!! I have a bunch of responses to all the posts! First of all, I was married to a mechanic for 8 years so I know very well how the flat rate/book hours system works. I know that the dealers are taking short cuts because they told me. My regular mechanic looked up the recall for me & told me exactly what they were supposed to do. He also told me that he replaced his own valve cover gasket because the only dealer in our area that was actually doing it correctly moved. Therefore, I called every dealer in the triad & all the service/repair reps admitted that they're building the cheap little shield instead of replacing it, as they're getting paid to do. I was satisfied with that repair, however, if I hadn't known to ask if they did the recall as they're supposed to I would have gotten shafted!! That's all I was saying is owners beware of your warranty/recall work not being done correctly & it just made me angry because they're getting paid to do it & if your'e a good ASE tech then it never takes as long as the job calls for & that's how they make their money. It's a race against the clock & the techs are pressured to sell some work to the customer & repair the vehicle ASAP! However, this particular short cut I uncovered is the dealers policy, that's how they instruct the techs to fix it so it's not always the tech, 9 times out of 10 it's "politics". I do plan on contacting GM on all the other dealers & possibly discuss the 1 issue I had with the good dealer. There were 3 recalls on my GTP so it took them 2 different days to do it. When I picked it up after the valve cover gasket was replaced she ran like a dream!! I felt like I had a new car! However, when I went to pick her up the next time she wouldn't even start, they had to jump me off & she's been running terrible ever since that day. So I called them & told them what was going on & they SAID they would look @ her & see if somehow they messed something up. Well, of course they denied that anything was done wrong by them & I need an EGR valve!! My service engine soon light was not even on!! They did something to my baby & I'm going to find out what it is!! FYI: all vann York dealerships took the short cut!!

    To LeadfootCJ7: I am a reasonable person. I just hate when shops try to undermine women because they think that we're ignorant when it comes to vehicle repairs. I get informed about ANYTHING that's being done to my girl, if I'm not already educated on that repair. So it actually shocked me to find out that there's only 1 dealer in my area that actually does warranty/recall work to GM standards. Oh yeah, & I drove 45 minutes to get to this dealer. I'm not bitter, my recall was done right, I just wanted to Inform other people so that they will have the knowledge they need to ask the right questions so they can get the repair that they're entitled to. What u don't know is that I actually called this dealers corporate & bragged on the job they did & informed them that they were the only dealer doing it correctly. I always try to give credit where it's due. Also, I was married to a mechanic so I know all about what goes on in the bays

    Yes I would love to get the ball rolling on finding out what the 1 good dealer messed up on the 2nd recall. It was just for power steering/ rack & pinion, but they had to jump me off that day but since it was closing they said to bring her back another day & they will see if they messed her up. However, she's my only vehicle so it took awhile to get a day to drop her off & a driver, etc. so by this time they tried so hard to deny any mistake on their part. So they told me a I need a new EGR valve, the SES light wasn't even on!! All I know is she was running like a dream until I took her in for the 2nd recall & she wouldn't even crank in their parking lot!!! How do I prove this?? I have 1 witness but it was closing time so the only person there jumped me off. Thx for any answers u can give me. I don't really want to get them in trouble, I just want my car to run right !!

    Good morning, If your car went in for a rack, ...... they shouldn't have been anywhere near an EGR or any of the top of the motor. What likely did happen though is that when the subframe was lowered to do the rack, something was bumped or a wire stretched. That's the best I could determine.

    Although I've also seen cars come in for service of say a rear wheel bearing and then "magically" when the car is being picked up the motor has issues that are blamed on the mechanic. Who I personally helped and knew that neither of us even opened the hood. Similar to how you know what goes on in the bay... I do as well. It's funny to see the issue from both sides.

    I know. It shouldn't happen, but they take advantage of women all the time. I am the guy at work who has all of my female co workers come ask me if what they are being told is correct. I have a sick sense of humor so I like to take them with me in my car at lunch to the shop. I act like a typical guy who doesn't really know much about cars and just ask questions about what they are doing or telling my female friend needs to be done. Once I have given them enough rope to hang themselves with I let them know I used to work on cars for a paycheck, still do it for a hobby, and most of my friends are still mechanics. The look on their faces is usually priceless. They also suddenly have a different story about what needs to be repaired. Most of the time my friends tell them they are not working on their car and to give them the keys. I like to think that it teaches these guys a lesson, but I doubt it only does for a week at best. These instances aren't as frequent as they used to be. Most of my co workers have started taking their cars to my friends for repairs because they know my friends will be honest and do the repair right.

    As for Bill Boosts point, its true. When I used to work on cars, we used to see it. It was the reason we would refuse to work on cars with over 80,000 miles unless we had worked on it before and knew the customer. Otherwise, with that kind of miles, things do break. It happens and can happen while you are repairing something else and then you are suddenly blamed. We would have people blame us for the A/C system failing 2 months after we performed a brake job. We would look at it and the compressor was just toast. It happens (esp in Texas where its hot). We were nowhere near it. Customers would blame us for their transmission failing after we replaced the alternator, etc. It was ridiculous. People like that are why shops often ignore legitimate complaints until you can prove to them how they caused the problem. There are just too many people out there looking for free work and it forces shops to treat everyone like a scam artist.

    I'm interested in what the places that weren't going to do it right were planning on doing. GM as I recall did a couple of different campaigns. In all, I've seen valve cover gasket replaced, heat shield on exhaust manifold removed and plug wire holder on valve cover removed and regular plug wire clips put on in place of it.

    Boy do I remember the scam artists!! I believe that they think that the shop has plenty of money & it's not going to hurt anybody to get a freebe, they don't realize that the tech has to do it for free!! I don't miss that part about being married to a tech! All I wanted from the dealer was a diagnosis & I'm taking it to my regular mechanic, who is a very close friend, & he was going to fix it @ his house. I told them that all I needed was diagnostics, which I know takes up some time, then they come back with an EGR valve? I'm not that ignorant! So now I have to pay for everything out of pocket!! I just don't believe it was that big of a coincidence.

    I will get the details but all I know @ this point is that they're building shields around the vcg, but I do recall 1 saying something about the clips.also, thx for the advice on the subframe being removed & something being bumped or a wire stretched. I just like to save my friend as much time as possible because he turns wrenches all day & then he's nice enough to help me after work.
