p0404 sorry
P0404 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Circuit Range/Performance - DTC Code
OBD2-OBDII Engine Light Trouble Code P0742 CHEVROLET - Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Stuck On | Engine-Codes.com
Took me all of 5 seconds to google both of those codes just fyi.
Most likely scenario get a new egr valve and drop your trans pan change the filter and put in new fluid. You might need a new Torque Converter Clutch Solenoid.

the code reader said what was wrong but I just wanted advice on what to do about it. How hard is it to fix the egr?
not hard, what usually happens is a piece of carbon gets in there and prevents the plunger from full closing, what i've done in the past it take it off and clean it really good, and also wouldn't hurt to buy a screened egr gasket. its a gasket that has a screen to prevent large pieces of carbon build up from clogging it.
where you at skippy?
p0404 means your actual egr postion and the desired egr position are not equal, like slick said its most likley cabon deposits,
p0742 torque converter clutch (tcc) system - stuck on. pcm detected that the tcc release switch is closed when the tcc is commanded off. mil will come on, and the pcm disables shift adapts and commands tcc on at maximum capacity
harsh shift, tcc shudder on decel, tcc applied in 2nd gear and p0742 may be caused by faulty tcc pwm solenoid.
rapid fluctuation in line pressure could set dtc, inspect for pressure regulator problem or abnormal line pressure.
other problems, turbine shaft teflon sealing rings have come apart and damaged the turbine shaft and channel plate,
internal PWM TCC soleniod o-ring out of postion or damaged.
thats all my scanner says good luck,

Im in regina, too bad haha. So your description says that the 0742 is likely a solenoid problem? Opinions here guys...what should i do: change the ATF or check out the solenoid?
Change the fluid. DON'T flush it, just drop the pan, drain fluid, change filter, install pan, refill with fluid. Can't remember the type of fluid you should use, hope someone else can chime in on that one, or just search the forum. It certainly won't hurt, is not expensive, and probably needs changing anyways.
dexron 6 should work in all dex 3 applications,
ive read its better in every way, Our Products — DEXRON®-VI
pssshhtt manitoban. you think that will solve my problem though? i deleted the codes and it hasnt come back. so im thinking you might be right about the dirty oil. the egr code came back though so i will fix that. any advice on the egr change?
try the simple frist,
but here you go other wise,
remove the case side cover
dissconnect Tcc solenoid connector
remove retaining clip (314)
remove solenoid (315)
Install solenoid (315)
install retaining clip (314)
put on connector,
put side cover on
probly should erase transmission adapttive pressure info with a scanner

thanks guy. advice on the egr?
well, i would erase codes and see what happens,
if it comes back, take off egr and try and clean as much carbon from it as possible
erase code and see what happens,
if it comes again just replace it

you guys are good
