I'm looking at buying a 2006 GT but they say it needs new UIM and LIM gaskets. I'm tempted to buy it as is and replace the gaskets myself so I have some questions -

How long can it run as it is without damaging anything?

Is there anything that might have been damaged already?

How much time and money does it take to replace them?

    Thanks!

    who is they said?
Gm started using the proper LIM in 05, just wondering why or for what reason you would replace the lower.

    O-K my bad/\

should probably read a couple how-2s you'll find here...It would be a bonding experience with your new car
My guess would be around 200 for parts and juices

They say half of 2005 did get the new style and half didnt, so this car could be a late 05 car but sold as a 2006.

You gotta see if the oil is milky indicating coolant contamination in the oil, this would be bad! How do THEY know the manifold gaskets need replacing? With ANY used car, it's a crapshoot unless you know the owner and what was done to the vehicle and how it was maintained...

Good info everybody. I was assuming that if I go 06 or 07 the LIM gasket was not an issue but apparently they used the plastic gasket on some of the 06's. I'm not sure if the (Ford) dealer just assumed they have to replace LIM or if they checked. They also said tie rod ends need replaced so I was going to make an offer and say I'd do all the work. I'll see what happens after the holiday.

65k miles and my offer was about 9 grand before I left. Not sure if I'll go any higher, there's an 07 around here with 70k starting out at 10.7 so I'm leaning more toward that one even though it's silver.

I don't know, just seems kinda high, maybe not.
I just checked on car-gurus for 06 GTs and the prices are all over.
It would be nice to get a killer deal on a 06+GT cuz S/C, without having to jump into tearing it apart right away. And if dealer bought maybe some warranty.
Keep looking and bouncing back here with your prospects, a-lot of the GPFs are out-to-lunch because of New Year, but I'm sure you will get some good feedback in 2013.

Yea some of the low mile ones are up around $15,000 here so I'd be pretty happy at 10. The one needing LIM gasket and tie rod ends was still at $12,900 as is when I gave up and left.

Too much IMO. 4 years ago I paid 15k w/ a warranty. Warranty was around 2k IIRC. 43k miles. I would drive the price down even more...especially if it needs work. Grand Prixs are a dime a dozen even if you gotta buy a higher mileage one for less I'd go that route. I would pay maybe 8-9k tops.
Squirrels are my engine. I need a Ford Regal
    04 Comp G.

I'm going to look at an 07 GT today with 70k miles. I don't want too many miles because I drive about 25k a year. But they are starting at 10,700 on this one. The only thing I don't like is it's silver.

Anything I should be watching out for? It should have the better gaskets I assume since it's an 07.

07 was a ****box it must have been driven on gravel for 60 of the 70k miles. Rattled, clunked, everything felt loose, headliner was actually brown instead of gray, tons of dust under the hood, smelled burning oil when I got out...

I'm still working on the 06 that needs the LIM gasket replaced. The guy said they checked it out and saw that it had leaked from the outside but there's no antifreeze in the oil so it wouldn't need replaced right away. I test drove an 07 Maxima SL today too, damn that was a nice car. Heated steering wheel kicks ass. Not a huge fan of the snowmobile tranny but everything else was pretty sexy.

We will see which dealer comes closer to my retarded lowball offers. I'm crunching some numbers right now but that heated steering wheel, xeonon HID's, and tri coat paint (pearl white) keeps creeping back into my mind......

How much $ did they want for the Maxima like 14?
You didn't say or the miles. Those buggys have a fairly snotty 3.5 the way it looks.

Well kids I went with the 07 Maxima. The sales guy finally wore me out. Got 800 more for my truck than anybody else has offered and paid 15k for the Maxima. It has just under 78k and drives like it's brand new. My supercharger fascination will have to be put off for now while my girly hands enjoy the heated steering wheel Thanks to everyone that responded about the LIM gasket.

when I was looking at grand prix GT/ SCs it was extremely hard to find one that was not beat to hell or scratched up bad! those are the same prices they are demanding around here in WI/IL. in fact the gxp 5.3 are much easier to come by for the same price or less. I must have burned a grand in gas going to look at all the cars all over both states. I almost gave in and got a 5.3 but I really dislike the looks of the gxp and the trans stories I read about. the double spoke gt with the supercharger is just what I had to have.
