Long story short, I do a lot of my own car maintenance and what started out as replacing a buddy's tie rods has turned into also replacing a cracked oil pan.

The problem is that the gasket that is sold to fit an 07 Grand Prix (base model) is COMPLETELY wrong. A better match shape-wise is sold for the 05 but it is attached to a baffle, which wouldn't fit. I'm sure someone has run into this issue before me, so what was your solution? The old oil pan looks like it was sealed with black silicone, but that leaked so I'm not sure we want to go that route.

there is no gasket, use grey rtv.

chances are the pan its self did not leak, but the pan bolts seeped oil. i used thread sealant on the pan bolts that are through the block. aka sides only. no leaks no more.

check the front and rear crank seals are not the leak, and the rear cover can leak oil too.

Thank you, I was hoping not but kinda figured that was the case. Any particular reason for grey rtv? I've also been advised black rtv or 1/16" rubber gasket material.

Having the same issue on a 2004 Grand Prix, GTP Comp g, 109k miles. Oil dripping from oil pan "plug/bolt". Also, nice, clean engine up top, but really oily oil pan on "bottom".

the grey is torque able gasket maker.

i used orange rtv on my 98, it takes a gasket, so i went and laid a nice smear of rtv on the block and pan, sealed them bolt threads and replaced both seals, granted my engine was out. nice and easy then.

Like said above there is no cut gasket for the 07. It is RTV. Grey is what it calls for. I use the synthetic oil gasket maker and it holds just fine.

Question: How hard is it to change the oil pan gasket on a Pontiac Grand Prix GTP, comp g, 2004?

My family's mechanic stated it is around 4 1/2 hours of labor, most other mechanics are quoting from the same computer system.

Quotes are anywhere from $556 to $650 so far. They are all saying you need a special lift and crane to remove the oil pain. I looked at it and it looks to me like one of the easiest, straightforward jobs ever.

I've changed a clutch before so I don't see why I can't change a simple oil pan gasket. Do you know if you actually need a "special" lift and crane to remove the "carriage" for the oil pan?

Also, according to the computer system at all of these repair shops I called for a quote, there is a gasket on an 04, grand prix, gtp comp g. Thanks!

You do have to support the engine to remove the pan, but then again, I've got two types of lifts lying around.... It's not that bad of a job at all. Welcome to why I don't take my car to a mechanic EVER! haha There's a couple how to threads in the forum on this, and it's never taken me more than an hour, no less 4! (course I have done several of these). Heck, the crane form Harbor Freight is only $140 on sale! In a pinch I've even used a plank of wood and a few cheap ratchet straps to lift it slightly! lol

you can lay a 4x4 over the bay, rad support to windshield cowl, then strap a chain over it to the pull brackets, then drop the sub frame then you got all the room in the world to work.

you can also use a engine hoist to lift and hold the engine up. how i did my tranny swap. same deal engine needs to swing in place.

and quotes like those are exactly why i do my own work. its gonna take ya all day pretty much cause its your first time doing this job, but in the end your time is free really. and that day is worth 500 bucks.

The oil pan is sandwiched and bolted into the lower right motor mount, so the engine has to be lifted up, but it doesn't require anything special; we used a lift from Harbor Freight, plus a tow chain and hooks to span over the alternator. Otherwise it wasn't difficult, just tedious. It took us two casual evenings after work, but we also discovered a few problems to deal with along the way - a stripped bolt and broken sensor sent us running around town to buy parts, plus the gasket issue. I think the worst part was laying on the ground scraping at the goo of the last seal overhead. If we'd done it on a Saturday it would've been finished by lunchtime

The 2004 uses a gasket. on the 04 the gasket has the windage tray built into it and has a steel oil pan. I recommend coating RTV on the 04 gasket. The 07 we are discussing has an Aluminum oil pan that has a built in windage tray which call for RTV as a gasket. The removal process is basically the same. The 04 has a different lower engine mount bracket.
