Well I have been suffering with this same issue since June of this year. I discovered this trick over on www.caraudio.com 's website a few days ago and read up on the fix for the Pioneer HUs. So today I had time to try the grounding of the RCA's and it worked almost perfectly.

Here are a couple pictures of my Pioneer 6000 HU with the ground wiring installed.

This trick cut the noise down to almost nothing. I can only hear a slight whine when the volume is turned down between 0-2 on the HU. I would say its a success!!! I have my radio back!!!

    Just to note.....

People might wonder how the ground stays attached around the RCA jack, well its quite simple actually. When you plug back in the male RCA to the Female RCA on the HU, it basically "smashes" the ground wire against the back of the HU's plate behind the female RCA jacks. Some folks have used a bit of sauter to secure the wiring, but it really is not necessary.

I hope this helps anyone who might have this issue with their Pioneer HU or perhaps any other HU that might have a similar issue with Alternator Whine (noise)

Moved this. While it is technically an audio thing, it is the sorta thing that we need in the Tech Tip section since it shows you how to correct an issue. Thanks for posting Geddy, nice work.

Is this an issue with the pioneers? I have never had this problem with any other deck I have had.

Yes this is mostly involving Pioneer HU's. It seems that when you use the RCA's on a lot of Pioneer systems, they are not as well grounded as most other car stereo's RCA hookups are. Others can produce the whine, but it seems mostly confinded to Pioneer HUs.

this is because of something called a "pico fuse". If you plug in or unplug the RCA's with the components powered you fry it and you get "noise".

Fun ****, decent decks with a horrible flaw. Good thing I got mine for cheap.

Nice cheap fix looks like you grounded out your RCA jacks. Can get RCA cables with a ground wire and do the same thing for future reference. You can possibly ground the body of the radio to a ground on the body somewhere also. I had the same thing in my old Pontiac a few years ago.

This is a great tip Geddy!

A slightly more elegant way might be to put a dab of solder at the base of the RCA and the metal chassis of the HU.

I have seen noise filters as well. I can't vouch for them but they do exist. Scosche ES004 10-Amp 100-Watt Single Stage Noise Filter at TigerDirect.com

Ghettracer- It's best to ground the RCA's to the HU and then ground the head unit to the body. This is to avoid ground loops.
