I just picked up a set of 40th anniversary roof rails the clear coat was pealing and they were that purple color so i decided to paint them black to match my car better i will show yous how to properly refinish them. I am going to do a BC/CC (base coat clear coat).
tools needed:
-wet sand paper 500-800 grit or dry sand paper
-wet sanding sponge and squeegee
-double sided 3m tape
-2 12" - 18" 2x4's
-HVLP spray gun 1.0 - 1.4 tip
-eraser wheel
-air compresor
-wax and grease remover or pre-clean any type of prep before paint
-yellow and blue tack rag
-rags
-sealer/adhesion promoter, paint, clear coat
1. Remove the glue from the under side of the roof rails using an eraser wheel. (you may find another way that is easier)
2. Set up your work area and get your sand paper.
my clear coat peeling
3.Sanding wet sand each rail properly till all edges are feather edged properly. i recommend using 800 grit sand paper because its not to light or rough i would use between 500-800 grit wet but you can also sand it dry.
before wet sanding
this is how it should look once one is wet sanded you don't want any shinny part showing you want it all to look dull
once they are both wet sanded they should look like this i used 800 grit wet
4.Set-up bring them to the area you will be painting and set them up. i put them on a piece of 2x4 with 3m double sided tape to hold them down so the air pressure wouldn't move them.
5. Cleaning then clean them using a wax and grease remover (this is what i used) them wipe them down with a yellow tack rag. yellow is more aggressive then blue and is used for your first coat.
once they are set up and cleaned they should look like this
6. Sealer spray sealer or adhesion promoter i used a white sealer to make sure i didn't have any contour mapping and so i could see the black lay better sealer is like primer but is non sand able within about 24 hours usually. i used DP50LF and DP401LF witch is a PPG product. im using a 1.0 tip spray gun set air pressure to 50-60 psi
in sealer they should look like this spray a light coat a heavy coat may cause the sealer to flake off. adhesion promoter make paint flexible and paint stick this will also work as well.
7.Base Coat use a blue tack rag after letting the sealer dry for 15-20 minutes + im using a 1.0 tip spray gun set air pressue to 45-55 psi
then spray your base coat i used JB9300 from shopline witch is just black and JR506 reducer, do 2-3 light coats. use your blue tack rag in between each coat waiting 10-15 minutes+ between each coat.
8. Clear Coat use a blue tack rag then spray clear coat do 2 coats
im using DC4000 clear coat because it lays nicely using DCH3070 catalyst low temp hardener i recommend using the DC4000 because it lays nice im also again using my 1.0 HVLP spray gun, DO NOT tack in between clear coats! set air pressure to 40-50 psi wait 20 minutes between coats. DO NOT set the booth on bake this could possibly cause the rails to warp!
this is how they should look once complete.
now you have a set of roof rails that look mint!
