Hello gentlemen,
I'd like to share a write-up on replacing the heating & A/C ventilation blower motor with you guys. This is a relatively intensive mechanical job so novices should seek the assistance of a more knowledgeable mechanic. Here's how one would replace the blower motor on a 2000 Grand Prix:
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. The blower motor is located on the passenger side of the vehicle, under the instrument panel. (refer to thisdiagram for a nice illustration of the blower components. Just click 'Get Info' next to the Parts Listing, then 'Go' in the window that pops up and the diagram is displayed)
3. Remove the right side sound insulator (trim panel) by removing the retainers and disconnecting the courtesy lamp.
4. Detach the blower motor electrical connector. Some applications may have cooling hose to the motor which should be disconnected.
5. Unfasten the blower motor mounting screws, then remove the blower motor from the vehicle.
6. If the blower motor fan (also called a 'squirrel cage') must be replaced, use the following procedure:
A) Remove the metal star clip retaining the fan cage to the motor shaft.
B) Remove the fan by pulling straight out.
7. If removed, install the blower motor fan, as follows:
A) Install the replacement fan cage onto the motor shaft.
B) Adjust the fan cage to get a clearance of 0.30 inch (7.5mm) to the motor mount plate.
8. Install the remaining components in the reverse of the removal procedure.
Make sure the electrical connection is secure. Tighten the motor screws to 14 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
9. Connect the negative battery cable, then test the blower motor for proper operations
Good luck with the repairs fellas. And remember to tip your bar tender at the end of the night
