    You'll be fine for a few days. Be gentle to it though. You don't want to load up the tailshaft and break it off.

    We'll pretend that it didn't get missed on my car with a good pile of power more than you are likely running. It wasn't noticed until the next trans swap about a month or two later. And yes.. I beat the piss out of it constantly.

    This thread reminds me of a time when friends and I secretly pulled a transmission from a Buick recently. Owner was dicking around for a long time and the car had to go but he didn't pick it up so we decided to keep the recently rebuilt trans. A few days later Scotty asked about the "hot" transmission and, in that moment in time, I had absolutely no fvcking idea what he was talking about. seriously. I couldn't understand why he was asking me about a transmission. A little while later I finally realized what he was talking about and thats when I realized peoples secrets are safe with me lmao

    I just completed a trans removal & reinstallation following this process. My car isn't a Grand Prix but it has the L67 driveline and a lot of the steps are the same.
    My 2002 Buick Park Avenue Ultra is supposedly set up the same way as a same year Bonneville SSEi.
    The one place I really had some trouble was getting the rear bolt to release the trans from the engine. I just couldn't get a socket on that bolt. It may have been me being a klutz, but I like to blame it on the rear exhaust and the power steering pump bracket. On my car the bracket behind the pump is a good sized chunk of aluminum, and it stymied me at every turn.
    Fortunately I watched a video made by a professional tech who was removing a trans from a Buick Lesabre. He got the back bolt by stacking two wobble extensions and a wobble 18mm. Then he reached up at a 45 degree angle between the trans and the engine to turn the bolt.
    I would have taken that approach but since I also needed to do my oil pan gasket I dropped the pan too. Once my oil pan was down I could see the bolt.
    I reinstalled the trans with a rebuilt torque converter and now I have 4th gear lock up. Fingers crossed that it stays that way.

    Here's all the bolts I took off:
    4 bolts from trans to engine
    That one backwards bolt
    The 4 bolts holding that bracket
    The 3 TC bolts on the flywheel
    Subframe is already dropped
    All the bolts/nuts holding any ground wiring to the trans

    either your missing a bolt some where or maybe theres tension with the tranny hanging off the engine? try lifting it up some tap with a hammer and a pry bar to split them.

    mine, i just shook the chain from the hoist to engine and they split.

    Hey guys, in the process to attempt to put my rebuilt tranny in tomorrow AM for the first time. Only took a tranny out from the JYard which was cut and pull out by any means necessary ha.... Now I have to take my old one out my car cleanly. BTW, I completely rebuilt the yard tranny......

    Big boy tools that I do have is:

    Floor jack

    4 3ton jack stands

    Engine support bar

    Tranny jack

    All from Harbor Freight

    I think all I have left is the b*itch bolt, 4 bolts holding tranny on engine from the (bell housing) (I think), 3 flywheel bolts and bolts on differential cover (bracket)... Will have to check tomorrow on ground wires and starter stuff.

    My question is, will I be able to drop the subframe naked without the rack and pinion on by leaving it in the steering area?

    And if so, after place tranny jack under before removing what I have left?

    un bolt the rack from the sub frame, let it hang there via the steering shaft. thats it.

    4 subframe bolts left.... Before I drop it, I wanted to see if this will work. The way I hooked this bar up? Any thoughts?

    if your hooked to the pull brackets thats fine.

    i used my engine hoist to hold the engine up in place. put my pull brackets back on to use them and holding points.

    You guys know..I like a 4x4 because I don't own a lifting support. All good in the end.

    The bish bolt isn't really a bish if you follow the write up. It's just a matter of having a few longer extensions.

    With the transmission out.. Can I put the subframe back on and take the engine support bar out?

    Will the subframe support the engine by itself without the support bar holding the engine up?

    no. your stuck with the support till the trannys back in.

    id rather have your support then a engine hoist sitting out over night, thats for sure lol
