Okay. Allow me to ask the question 'cause I just dont know. What is the advantage of doing this or what does it give me that I currently do not have with my current D.I.C.?
the 3 button DIC that comes standard with the base model 04+ only has trip computer and a very general oil monitoring system. The 5 button model has trans temp gauge, volt gauge, boost gague (if applicable), outside temperature gauge, compass, timer, oil % remaining, trip computers, avg speed, avg fuel economy, instant fuel economy, range, etc. This upgrade only applies to the 04+ crowd. You could put the DIC into any other car that uses the Class 2 Serial Data bus and have these features as well though I suppose.
Crap, why must you tempt me so. I read that list and Im like HECK YEAH, where do I get one for my 2001. I really dont like you right now.
You're fired. Pick up your things and get out.
You're still fired, now get out.
Ooooooo, its on now!
i'm curious as to why you bothered drilling holes in your existing surround? wouldnt you want the 3 hole button dash piece for later if you have to put the 3 button one in to go to the dealer?
I thought of it but decided I may actually swap the controls inside the 5 button and just have the xtra 2 buttons not work properly. The mileage would still show up correct and I don't have to keep track of the extra piece.
i would expect that the functionality of the 3 button brain in what looks to be a 5 button would confuse/concern dealer...
maybe not though
on a side note, i bet you could have the mileage in the 5 button programmed to match your vehicle... i would think a spedo repair shop could do it. (perhaps calling specmo.com) ?
it is possible but not very easily done and usually costs (from what I've heard) quite a bit of money. Plus, sending it away still means you can't drive the car while its out. I don't think they would care (or use) the extra buttons. They are only for volts and trans temp and oil life and such and fuel economy. The actual mileage shows up as soon as you open the door or push the trip button and that still works no matter the buttons that are connected. I'm thinking mostly for inspections when they check the miles. Even though for warantee work, the shop could look at either the BCM or the DIC to see what they are... if they match, I don't think they'd care what buttons work and what don't.
Thanks for all that you're doing for the 04+ GP community Tyro, youre the sh*t man!! Hook me up with that HUD write up,lol!
okay...im confused, the 5 button DIC and trim plate setup that Ed Morad sells isnt just a plug and play type of thing? or if you were to do it the "plug and play" way then you would have to have your odometer sent off to be reprogrammed? So this is why you did this mod the way you did as opposed to just plug and play?

the DIC brain tracks mileage, in adition to the speedometer cluster. if you dont care that they match, you can just plug it in and go. if you want the mileage to be correct, you need to have the mileage programmed into the DIC. (way around this is if you could find a DIC that had a bit more miles than your car, then when your car is to that same mileage, plug it in) -- tricky to catch the exact mileage perhaps though.
Yep, the only place you (or a service/inspection station) can see the mileage is on the DIC. So, if you don't either find one with more mileage than what you have and swap them at precicely the same moment or keep the original wired up it could end up getting you in some odometer fraud issues. Something you deffinately don't want.
