ls swap in a gtp

I've looked and looked and somehow I can't find what I thought would be a common question. Can I put a ls motor in my 98 gtp? It's tax time and a come across a totaled 05 gxp for real cheap. Anyone done this or know if it can be done? I assume it would since its coming out of a car offered with a 3800.

Anything is possible if you have the time and money. The engine will fit...with a minor amount of fab work. Wiring it and making it play nice is the pain.

measure the distance between the frame rails of yours and then measure the distance on the GXP. probably just need the cradle too.

You will also need to beef up your trans as it was made to barely handle the power put out by a 3100 v6 let alone a 5.3l v8.

I'd love to go for it. Just can't find any support in case of trouble. I'm a decent mechanic, but by no means a professional. Regardless of doing the swap, I was still going to buy the car for 1000 to make money on it. I was sitting here when the idea dawned on me. If it's do-able, then why not if I'm going to have everything. I was just curious if it would bolt in without any fab work. I'm sure painless wiring could whip me up a harness for a few hundred bucks.

turbo 3800s are way less problem to get running and making solid results rather than trying to swap rewire it and get it running right.

They are completely different yet almost the same.

Confusing right.................sorta.

NON gxp transmissions have a different trans case. GXP's use a special case because of the flywheel/starter setup. The internals are also different between 97-02 and 03+ cars, they got upgraded parts. Also the GXP's have a TCM (transmissin control module) that is unique to the GXP because it has a 5.3 V8 motor with a completely different power control module (PCM).

if you had the car the engine wiring part wouldnt be that hard i dont think. just knowing the little bit i know about LS swaps creating a stand alone engine harness is not that hard if this is similar to all the other LS stuff. the **** part would be making all the stuff in the cab of the car work correctly. IE your gauges and what not.

Like I said turbo a 3800 then save and save and save some more for a triple edge performance transmission........

Turbo 3800 can make 450hp + pretty easy.

So basically, it's a direct bolt in, minus the wiring? I'll have 2 complete cars. I should be able to pull both wire harnesses and have painless make one. I had an old friend that did that on a ls6 blazer, and it was surprisingly cheap.

If you can make a harness and have the whole donor car sure the rest would be easy. Swaps go to hell and get overly complicated when people are trying to do things from scratch. Use as much oem components and wiring as possible.
