    Hi all, my old '95 Grand Prix SE has a new quirk. When I first start up, no problem, but after a bit a very noticeable squeak comes from deep down in the steering column when I turn the wheel, even if it's only a small turn. Even at a full stop, slight pressure either way on the wheel gets the squeak. It's definitely not the normal low-fluid or failing-pump whine. The car has a fairly new steering pump, fluid level is good.

    It sounds like something's dry. I see under the dash where the mechanism goes into a covered tunnel of some sort, presumably down to the rack, that seems like about where I hear the noise from. I suspect I have a leak in the rack & at this point simply finding where to refill it seems like a good next short term step.

    Anyone have thoughts or ideas about what the issue is? Where do I add rack fluid? Is there some other potential source, like a grease nipple under the dash or car, for the mechanism leading into the rack?

    Did you check for air in your powersteering fluid? Is there any visual leaks that you can see? Pull the boots off and see if there wet. Id look at the line ends, at the pump and rack.

    I would also take a look at your belt and ps pulley, just to be on the safe side :-)

    Thanks - those sound like good checks to make - I'll look around under there. I'll also not assume the pump is good, even though it's pretty new.

    You could pull the ps cap while running have someone turn the wheel both directions see if any bubbles come out. And look for the noise at the same time. As far as something in the column, there's a joint with splines and two bolts. If you end up taking the rack out mark the splines with a paint pen, so you can get the whell straight. Or you will have fun trying to align the wheel to get it centered.

    the intermediate shaft on the newer cars is made so it only fits one way, with any lick yours is the same.

    if its coming form the steering wheel / column area you may need to take the wheel off and clock spring to see if theres any thing you can lube up.

    at the bottom is also some kind of bearing that holds the shaft before it meets the intermediate shaft. its kinda hidden by the boot.

    Thanks guys! I'm liking Scottydogg's comments especially, about that "intermediate shaft"...that's where I hear noise. Although it's also likely that noise seems to be there however originates further down, like in the rack... Still looking for where to add fluid to the rack (thinking likely it's leaked) and also what kind of fluid...my Chiltons is hidden somewhere in the garage (and isn't exactly helpful on many items like this).

    the rack is filled via the power steering pump.
