When's the last time you flushed the system? And if recently, did you use power steering fluid or trans fluid? A lot of people who try to get by with using trans fluid have this issue because it doesn't work well in the cold for our power steering systems (at least in my experience).

did the wheels turn at all? did you drive it? thinking the fluid was really cold and thick, should warm up while driving.

Wheels turns and it drives. Just whines. Every other time i have had them whine they were low on fluid. So i would add some and it would quit. This time i checked while whining just after shut down and all bubbly.

I have never flushed the system. 205K miles.

so it never stopped the whine right? might be the pump taking a dump. a flush and some p/s medix stuff might help out.

if you pull the return line off the bottom you can drain the pump fast and easy, its a rubber hose with a clip on it. you can get to it with the pass wheel removed.

There is probably a leak somewhere. But it leaks a Little oil also so haven’t been to worried. Nothing large volume. Probably should clean it up down there and monitor.

Put 150 miles on today. It quiets down when it warms up. When it warms up i will drain out the reservoir and refill and see that helps.

So i drained (sucked out) some fluid out of the resivoiur. And put some new stuff in and its a quieter can still hear it whine a bit and it definitely leaks somewhere but to cold to look at it any more.

Do just the pumps go bad? Or how do you know if the rack is bad. Still steers the same.

Whining pump with fluid = pump dying. It's not a hard replacement at all, just gotta take off the alternator.

Did the 02navyblue power steering flush and fill and added a bottle of lucus. Seems to be a-lot quieter but it is 40 also. Will see how it goes. Man some dirty stuff came out of there!!
