god its amazing how fast the PM gears come apart in things....they chip and shatter instead of cracking or bending....
What causes this? Power? Did I miss a bearing?
what does the ring gear look like?
they are not very impact resistant....shock loading from slip n grip
drop a PM rod onto the floor, half the time it'll snap in half...drop a cast L36 rod onto the floor....and youll probably have to beat the **** outta it with a hammer...and then it'll bend...not shatter
PM is cheap mass production of parts just strong enough to last 100k.
they also tend to wear down quite quickly and end up with more and more backlash.
Ring gear is destroyed. Also what is a PM rod :/
Powdered metal!?
Destroyed meaning missing teeth
yes powdered metal.
all it takes is 1 tooth on each planet to fracture and the chunks will destroy everything else in a snowballing pile of fun.
worn parts with excessive backlash can do it by ending up with the gears suddenly ridding onto an unworn portion and generating high loads in just a tiny area of the teeth which leads to small chunks and the snowball effect takes out ever larger chunks.
Not that it matters now that the damage is done, but check the thrust washer behind the sun gear, it has probably failed. What happens is it sends chunks of metal in between the gears and the gears then self destruct.
its a Torrington bearing not a thrust washer. but yeah good point....far too often i seee folks do horizontal installs without using petroleum jelly to stick em into the pockets in the correct orientation.
thing is that you cant get the diff cover flush if its not in the pocket correctly....there will be a gap that you can only force and possibly snap the diff cover ears off
