hey guys i need a little help. I CANT FIND ANY INFORMATION OR PARTS ON THE LQ1 aka 3400 twin DOHC v-6...i bought a 93 grand pirx from a friend of a friend who had blown a head gasket on the car and thought he would try tackling the project himself...but stopped half way through so im pretty much putting a puzzle together here lol.....so if anyone has ANY information that could assist me in rebuilding this correctly that would be greatly appreciated

Not.to much info.here. I found most my info.on 60degreev6.com. there is a whole dohc section. after lots of reading there got my 95lq1 figured out. Lmk.if you need any help as well. Headgaskets are straight forward but timing the lq1 is the hardest. It requires some special tools I could help you out with.

iirc the engine was only rated around 210hp but i had a 95 gtp in HS with the 3.4 DOHC engine in it and i really liked that car. had a nice power band those engines sound great too. however they are kind of a maintenence whore and getting harder and harder to find them too.

    Good luck!

    http://60degreev6.com/content.php/30...re-Walkthrough

Here is a good how to with some pictures. You need the cam sprocket tool and a hold down tool to keep the cams from moving once timed. I actually made my own hold down tool outa a piece of steel and a bolt. Worked fine. The tools for it are over a 100 bucks or so from what I found on line. I got my sprocket tool for like 30 bucks and only a few bucks to make my own. I will see if I can dig up a pic of tool.
Once you read up on the how to it will make more sense to you. LMK if you have questions. Not to much Lq1 support here as its an old engine, but wbody.com and 60degreev6 there is where I got all my information from. The timing kit I think is like 100bucks with new pullies and a timing belt, you reuse your timing belt tensioner and there is a how to on how to preload it with oil and put a paper clip or something in to hold it loaded, then once everything in you pull the pin and loads up tension, then you can time the cams, start at the rear and work forward.
Good luck with it but you will find its not as hard as you think and its a neat engine and sounds sweet when you rev it above 6k

Here is a pic of my hold down tool and the new pullies.

1/2inch steel bar and a pair of m8x1.25x45mm bolts and.you can save yourself some coin

Also after you hook up the timing belt and get thr plenuem back on and such, start it up see if it runs to check timing before you put all the accessories back.on and the timing cover. Mine started on 1st crank..yeah

ANOTHER IMPORTANT TIP>>>USE A 6 Point socket to take the cam sprocket bolts off!!! You don't want to strip them. Ask me how I know...no one sells them but a junkyard and not many lq1s in the yards.

Also, the 93lq1 is a non interface motor, so if you mess up the timing you wont hurt anything, it just wont start.

    Finished project..lol...

i dont believe the 95 is interference either i blew a timing belt on that once too. was fine once i got a new belt put on so im about 99% sure 95 lq1 isnt either unless of course someone put an older engine in before i got it.

96 and 97 are interface motors. They changed the heads for more flow. I bought my 95vert with a blown timing belt for 900bucks cause the girl was quoted like 2k, mechanic told her she needed a new engine. I put a belt one and some new plugs, wires, vac hoses, gaskets etc, runs like brand new!
