I have an 02, 145,000 miles, runs like the day I purchased her new in Nov 02. As of about 4 hours ago what I am not able to do is turn the key to the "OFF" position. I am able to turn it to "almost off" and remove the key and all the dash lights go off so " I think " I have shut off all the power. Guess I will find out in the morning if the battery still has power. The way things are now I do not need a key to crank the car, I can turn the ignition switch without the key in it and crank the car and turn the car off, I just can not turn the ignition switch to the lock position. Making sure I lock the car doors is not the school solution.

Thanks to all in advance for your assistance. Bill

Thank You, tried that yesterday with not luck, further investigation today revealed a broken purple and white wire in the plug at the bottom of the gear shift lever. A good friend came over with some of the very small pins / connectors, striped back the wire, slid it back into the plug all within about 20 minutes and the key now will turn to the lock position! However, when I open the drivers door with the key out of the ignition the chime dings until I shut the door. I don't recall it doing that before unless I had left the keys in the ignition? Any suggestions ?

thats a common wire break at the shiftier.

no idea why the chimes would be on with the key in your hand. thats a odd one. but as long as it stops when the doors are shut it not to much to worry about.
