Hey guys. I just got done replacing my in dash speakers, and it got me thinking about replacing my instrument cluster. My odometer doesn't work (in the last year I put "170" miles on the car hahha.) Also my speedometer will randomly jump all over the place, and is regularly off by 5 - 15 mph either way. We have a local self serve salvage yard here, and I can get an instrument cluster for $15, which seems like a good deal to me. What I'm wondering is if I have to use the exact same one, or can I get a slightly different one? Right now I have to speedo w/o tach. If I were to pick one up with a tach would the tach work, or am I missing the connection? Anyone know what years used the same clusters? I don't know of a resource to cross reference part numbers online.

'88 - '93 would physically fit. The interior had a makeover for '94 - '96 before GM went to the Gen II w-body platform, so the dash is completely different (looks very, very similar to the Gen II). As for adding the tach, I THINK the 91+ already had the white tach wire in the harness, so it would be plug and play. If not, you'll have to tap into the white wire that's in with the bundle of wires under the ignition control module. That should be the wire to receive the tach signal. Here's a good discussion about this, and what else you're going to need:

For the cluster wiring does this look right? I don't even see a tach on there.

Also, something else I forgot to mention. My temp and gas gauges seem to work fine, but both the gas and temp warning lights are on almost all the time. Every once and awhile they seem to fade/flicker off, it looks like a bad connection if that makes sense, but they always come on. Any ideas?

I couldn't tell you if that's the right cluster wiring diagram or not. Have you tried just plugging it in and seeing if it works? It's quite possible you won't need anything other than maybe a wire to the oil sending unit. You'll know if you do because oil pressure will read max constantly.

As for the check gauges/low fuel lights, that's a very common problem for the '88 - '93 gauge clusters. There is a fix for it, though it will involve resoldering 14 pins on the back of the gauge cluster. If you can solder, it's a very easy fix.
