Need some help. Driving back to Colorado from Texas. While driving my rpms surge then the car dies. I can start it again right away but it keeps doing it. It happens worse when I give it any throttle while cruising at highway speed. It threw a code P1404 I think it was. Bad egr. I managed to get to a part store and replace the egr. Made it 50 miles then it started doing it again. 98 gtp

    Unplug it?

Maybe that will make it drive better.

did you replace the tubes as well? or just the egr?, maybe the tube is clogged up. or maybe its split and leaking.

Just replaced the egr. I think I'm going to try and just block it off. Though talking to a couple people they said that it might not be the problem. Now that I'm in a hotel for the night and not on the side of the highway in scorching heat I can describe it better.

I made it about 120 miles, after slowing down for construction I went to accelerate slowly and the tach started surging basically but with no power. Pulled over, the car started right back up. Kept driving, about every 5-10 miles it would do it again. The rpms kinda dance around 1000, if I put it in neutral and pump the gas a bit sometimes I can save it from dying, but the rpms will kick to about 3000 then slowly come back down. I stopped and bought a new EGR, made it about 50 miles and it did it again. Stopped for about 20 minutes, put my stock PCM back in, thinking something might change. Drove another 10 miles into the next town with one small hiccup. The car idles just fine, no problems at all with that.

Here's what I've figured out so far. It really only happens when the car has been running awhile and the engine has a significant amount of heat to it. My coolant temperatures are right where they are supposed to be though. Currents thoughts are possibly the crankshaft position sensor? I don't believe it is a fuel problem. I have a new pump as of 6 months ago, and I have pressure in the rails.

Well after some looking around I found my problem. The wires for the egr plug had melted through the insulation. Got those fixed up and made the rest of the drive back to Colorado.

So I guess it isn't fixed. It's been driving fine until today. Was on the highway and in traffic for about an hour and a half and the car just died. Like before I can start it up right away and drive maybe 50 feet then it dies. I parked it for 45 minutes then started it up and it ran fine for the 10 miles I had to get home.

I seriously don't know what's going on here. I replaced the crankshaft sensor a week ago and that didn't fix it. It seems to only do it after the car gets hot. Though my trans temps and coolant temps are normal.

Might want to check the ICM. I've had one fail this way. It's the plate looking thing that the coils bolt to.

Also double check all the wiring harness down there for cracks and cuts.

What's the best way to test out the ICM? I just called advance and NAPA and neither can test it for me.

Test it with another ICM from another 3800 car, as in swap em.

Alot of times a ICM can test good yet still be bad. Thats what I would do if you can, seeing how you can't get it tested.

Mine did the same thing and it turned out to be the MAF sensor. Unplug the MAF next time it does it and see if it does any better. Will run rich but not stumble like it does now!!!
