I have a 97 gtp. I noticed a few months ago that when I put my car in reverse and roll a couple feet my car makes kind of a crunch sound then nothing. I get out of my driveway put the car in drive and everything is fine. Doesn't make the sound after rolling forward. It only makes the sound after the car has been sitting in park for awhile and seems to only happen after i reverse a few feet, not immediatly when the car starts moving. I noticed the passenger side CV boot was torn so I figured replacing the shaft would be a solution. So last weekend we changed both shafts out. It didn't seem to make the noise anymore after the swap, but after driving it for awhile I noticed the noise came back. I've been busy for the past week so I haven't messed with it until a little bit ago when I got off work and decided to do some investigating. Checked it out and it looks like all the grease has been pushed out of the inner boot on the passenger side. I felt all around it and the boot doesn't appear to be torn anywhere but its definatly fresh grease.
I'm pretty stumped as to what is going on. I'm going to try seeing if the axle nut or wheel nuts are loose later when it stops raining but I don't think thats the issue. I'm starting to suspect it could be a bad hub assembly bearing has something to do with it but i really don't know.
If any one has an idea please help!!!

I changed the top motor mounts not to long ago. Haven't changed the lower tranny one yet. That could be part of it but I really doubt it. Doesn't sound like a bad mount noise.

thats 100% normal. it will do it if you drive forward after a start up as well. its the ABS self check. the car does this every time you start the car and drive it.

also been described as a metal rake dragging sound.

ok scotty. that makes me feel a little better. but what is up with all the grease coming out of the boot already? I checked earlier and couldn't really find any rips or holes. Could it have just came out of the end of the boot or something? Or just had too much in it?
IDK I might just be over thinking this whole thing lol.

if the boot is leaking on a new axle, take it out and get another one, aka warranty it.

the hub has no grease to leak out, its a sealed bearing.

unless its not grease your seeing, but oil leaking from the oil pressure sensor, its right above the pass side axle and just past the oil filter, if you turn the wheels to the left and stick your head from behind the tire you can see it. a flash light helps in the day time sometimes. if the plug is wet with oil its leaking, they start out dripping a little and get as bad as pouring warm syrup out a plastic bottle.

if this is leaking change it asap. i lost 3 quarts of oil in no time when mine blew out.

PS ive blown 3 of them so far, now i have a brass plug sealing the hole up, sick of replacing it. they only run 12 bucks, but they all fail it seems sooner or later.

No it was definitely grease. It was all piled up below the boot and slung all over the firewall and oil filter.
I guess it could be a bad shaft. I work at a parts store and we rarely get defective shafts but anything is possible.
the reason I suspected a hub assembly is maybe the bearing is going bad making it more difficult for
the shaft to turn the wheel. Which is why it ruined the shaft and explaining the crunch sound.

axle's go bad all on their own. nothing to do with a bad hub, and that crunch sound is normal.

sounds like you got a cut or bad boot on the new one. sucks, but its a do over now. good news is, they are easier the second time around.
