Hi, I have a 1999 Grand Prix GT and I found out a couple days ago that my air conditioner doesn't work. No cold air comes out at all, it actually is warm air. I don't know what is wrong for sure because when I turn on the air, the compressor runs non-stop but the cooling fan doesn't come on. The air lines aren't cold at all either. There is some pressure in the lines because I poked the valve with a screwdriver and it shot out. How much pressure I don't know. I read that when you have low refrigerant the compressor only runs maybe 5 seconds then shuts off. What could be wrong if it runs non-stop and the fan doesn't work? I let the car warm up to 210 and the fans do kick on so they do work. Please help. Thanks

It could be low still. Get a set of gauges and check out the pressure.

If you aren't experienced with A/C systems then it may be a good bet to take it to a shop and have someone check it out. Might also have a leak somewhere and it may be low on freon. They should be able to pinpoint it w/o costing you a ton of $$.

I would check the manual to confirm the coolant type, pry 134a, buy a can at autoparts place, use youtube, i like scotty kelmer, as a diy guide to/and refill the sys. If there is a leak then fix it. But thats just me.

I bought a can of refrigerant with a gauge on it and hooked it up and the pressure was a little low but not much. I added until the recommended pressure for the temperature outside and it still didn't work. The compressor still runs non-stop but the fans did kick on for a little while but would shut off after 15 to 20 seconds or so. The air didn't get any colder either.

The gauge on the can only works on the low side. I don't have AC manifold gauges to check that. It's possible to have clogs in the AC system?

does your out side temp sensor work right on the DIC? or climate control, where ever the out side temp is shown? if thats wrong the a/c wont work right.

Blend door not moving over to let the cold air come out? Possibly the evaporator fins are plugged with a mouse next or something?

I know the aluminum piping with the low pressure port is supposed to get cold right? Well, it doesn't get cold at all just warm if that helps any.

I already tried adding more refrigerant and it didn't help as I said above.

Those gauges on the cans are super inaccurate. I have one to use for filling cars and it says 80 psi when it's at like 40.

I know it is full because it wouldn't take in anymore refrigerant after a while of filling it. It wasn't that low in the first place. Thanks

Could be a blown out orifice tube. You really need a set of gauges to see what high side is reading. If orifice tube is blown out it will never get cold but you'll still have a system full gas. To verify hook up high and low side and the pressures will be nearly the same. The compressor will not kick on if the system is low as it has a pressure switch to prevent damage. Its not gonna be an interior blend door problem cause the lines would still be cold on low side and hot on high side and start forming ice on low side due to lack of airflow across evaporator coil. Could also be the valves in the compressor, but from my experience that don't just happen overnight its more if a wear out thing with the ones I've encountered. I think autozone may rent the gauges if you don't wanna spring for a set of your own.

The compressor is always on and I don't know how long the air hasn't worked because I just got the car 3 months ago. So I guess it could be the valves in the compressor but I have no idea. I might try to get my hands on a set of gauges sometime this week and see what the high side pressure is. Thanks
