Thread: Getting ready for my gen v swap

In a week or so I'm gonna be doing my gen v swap. I have most of pieces the only thing I still need to pick up is 2 new sets of injector o-rings.

The one thing I'm most concerned about is the alternator. I have a 97 gp, do I absolutely need a relocation kit, or the newer stlye bracket? I thought I remember reading somewhere that you could modify the alternator for it to fit.

I've done a LOT of research so far, any other advice/tips?

I ended up going with the newer bracket/alt setup on my '97. I couldn't make enough clearance to work, and my old alt was on its wat out. I have an '04 alt/bracket and the relocation brackets, but if you go with the '99-'03 alternator, you won't have to worry about the relocation bracket. I do like the decoupling pulley on the newer alt, though.

BTW, eBay is a great place to find an alternator and bracket extremely cheap. Most of the sellers offer a short warranty.

Also I'm on stock exhaust manifolds, for the time being. I'm gonna get headers drop a pulley and tune at the same time.

For now I should be fine on the stock tune, correct?

If you are keeping your stock TB, then you should be alright for now. I strongly recommend a wideband and some way to watch for knock before you consider dropping pulley sizes.

Yup stock tb, I'll probably port it before I get it tuned. And I also have an aeroforce to monitor knock.

I could find the alternators on eBay but not actual bracket.

They are labeled as belt tensioners or tensioner assemblies.

Whatever pulley you were currently running...figure at least .2" sizes larger to keep the KR the same or less.

Well I'm on the stock pulley size.

Why should I have to pulley up if theres the same amount of boost

On a stock pulley, you'll be fine. When you plan to drop sizes, get a size or two larger than you would with a gen3. If you think you want to do a "standard 3.4 setup", go with a 3.5 for the genV. It is more efficient and makes a little more boost/flows more (cooler) air for a given pulley size.

No I didn't bill got a gen v to fit in his 97 Bonne.

Im gonna see if I can get enough clearance by taking off the plastic backing and shaving it down a bit.

I cant say iv tried to fit one on a 97 before but it has been done without a tensioner setup swap. Personally I would just goto a self pull it yard and grab the newer style setup and make it easy for yourself.

People thought I was lieing when I said I did my genV swap for 400$.... As long as you cut the lim bigger yourself, make your own evap blockoff, drill your tb for the pcv system, and get a genV off ebay for 280$ its a cheap and awesome upgrade. I made a whole 1psi more boost with 2 sizes larger pully. Less belt drag and more boost = a giant increase in smiles per mile.

I bought my gen v and LIM for 320 shipped that included a metal supercharger gasket, l32 tb, all bolts and the evap.

Metal LIM gaskets were 50 I think and the adapter plate i got for 60

I might be buying a new alternator and bracket from another member. I would go to a u-pull it but the're aren't really any around. Theres a junk yard down the road but im pretty sure they'll over charge me for it. How much would you think it would cost from a yard?

I pulled one for a buddie here and it was 15$ for the tensioner bracket and 20$ for the alt
