So this i the first time I have had my car in the cold and the oil light flashes, in no particular rhythm, and then after the car gets up to temp the light stays off. Oh yea on a different note the temp doesn't seem to be very stable it goes up to about 200 then back to right under 180. does anyone have any info that might help i would greatly appreciate it. thank you

First off, it would help to know what car, engine, year, mileage, mods, etc that you have.

Second, when was the last time (months or mileage) that you changed your oil and filter and what grade oil did you use?

Third, when was the last time you checked your oil level?

fourth, are you running a cooler thermostat than stock? if it drops to around 180* assuming that the actual temp, and not reading it off the gauge on your dash) you probably have a colder thermo.

I have a stock t-stat in right now. By looking at the gauge on the dash, it barely gets above 180°F. But my scanner shows that it stays around 195°F.

10W40 is a little thick for our cars. In the summer, you might use 10W30, but I would recommend 5W30 in the winter.

And you didn't mention anything about checking the oil level. Yes, they changed the oil, but if it was low on oil, that could cause the oil light to come on. You need to check the oil once a week (at least that is what I recommend).

And you didn't tell us how many miles are on your car.

And you didn't tell us how many miles were on the oil before it was changed.
