Has anyone used an engine and/or transmission additive?

If so any difference? What brand?

Just curious. I've never used one.

I've used Lucas engine and trans additives. Didn't notice anything on the engine side. Trans was slipping and having issues. The Stop Slip did appear to help a lot.

I've also used the same additive that Dave at TEP sells with transmissions. It's drive train fluid additive to help keep the fluid lubricating the diff.
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

I got my 01' SE with 30k on it in 03'... Used Prolong in engine with every oil change as it was my DD (110 mile round trip daily). Going on 197k on that engine and it starts right up, no lifter tick and runs real well. Regular maintenance of course helps. It's hard to find in stores but you can get gallon purchases online for like $100 or so. Also, showing my nephew once that it worked, I changed the oil on my Explorer and with engine running I added the Prolong to the engine and you could hear it quiet down and smooth out, no joke. I used it primarily with regular oil. My GTP gets Mobile1 so no need...

Lucas is good too, used the tranny and injector stuff. Good products.

I rarely use an engine additive, unless you consider regular oil changes and a quality oil filter an additive. The only thing I've run in the crankcase is Seafoam on occasion. Never lost a motor to just regular maint.

I have also used the Lucas trans additive and it seems to work well. Used their power steering stop leak as well.

Do you guys think a trans additive would help clean a solenoid in the trans?

When I put in new tranny, I tried to flush as much of the old oil out but wasn't able to get all out of trans cooler. The old oil was burnt and had metal in it. I now have a shutter/vibration problem when I'm cruising and steady on the petal.

    Its worth a shot.

I just put in some Lucas stop slip in to hopefully stop my leak around my axles

Being that the old oil was burn doesn't really matter seeing as you got most of it and put fresh atf in.....but the fact that there was metal shavings from the previous trans that is what's probably the cause of your issue. Not additive is going to clean out metal shavings if they have made their way into the valve body and channel plate. You may get lucky that over time they will work their way to a point where they pass through the filter and caught but chances are they will have done damage to the valve or bore by then.

Pretty sure that Sal just rebuilt his trans a little over a year ago and hasn't put that many miles on it. Not enough time for crud and crap to stick to valve or solenoids in the valve body or channel plate if it was thoroughly cleaned during the rebuild. It may be something to use as a last ditch effor but an additive isn't going to break up metal shavings.

I'm assuming that metal went thru the trans. I'm guessing maybe there was just old burnt oil still in the system.

I haven't driven the GP that much since I did the trans last January. I think I may have driven 2k miles since then. Lol.

I'm just trying to see if an additive might work before having to pull the trans apart.

If you go here, you can see pics of old oil and pan. Just have to click each one to see

Well the pan didn't look horrible......but all it takes is one little piece of the something that was in the trans cooler to mess with the transmission.

I had excellent results with Lucas stop slip. It prolonged the life of my blazer's trans that I put through hell and my 1st trans in the Daytona when the tcc was breaking apart. However both instances were just prolonging the inevitable, but I've heard of customers (when I was slinging parts at AAP) using it when they had sticking gears/prolonged shifts and didn't have a problem anymore for many miles when they put it in their transmissions.

Do you guys think with the beef up tranny I had it's worth trying the Lucas?

This tranny wasn't cheap. Don;t know if the Lucas will hurt ore then help.

Didn't look horrible. LOL. I think it was bad with all that metal. Especially around the magnet. Some of it came out when I dropped the pan. Fluid was black.

Lucas is great stuff but the additive I use in transmissions is'nt even for transmissions, it's STP. An old transmission builder showed me this,he put a can in every rebuild and never had a come back.He told me it cushions the shifts and frees anything that's sticking. Since I have been using it I have never had a problem with any transmission I have owned. I use it in my mud racer and haven't blown a transmission yet but there's no chain in that transmission either.

markie, you may want to post this in the transmission forum so as not to hijack this thread, but here is some info that may help.

Is it like a banging shift? If so, while it is acting up take it to somewhere that has a GM Tech II scanner or a trans shop that can pull codes (Autozone will not be able to read these). Do NOT shut the car off when you get there as it will reset the codes. Most likely you are getting a P1181 Max adapt shift. My 00 GP does this when the trans heats up sometimes. Mostly in stop and go driving. From what I've read it could be the pressure control solenoid. Next time I drop the pan and change the fluid/filter I'm going to add a trans-go shift kit and a bottle of Lucas stop-slip and see if it helps/cures my issue. If not then I'll just drive it until it eats the trans and then get another one.

You changed the oil with the motor running? No wonder it smoothed out when you put oil in it if it didn't have any inn there
