Hey guys, new to the forum.
Just bought a 2005 Grand Prix. Car seems to be in good condition except for a couple of things. I dont know too much about cars, and was hoping you guys could help me out....

Half the time the car doesnt start. I have to give it a bit of gas soon after I turn the key or sometimes the car will just shut down. I talked to my cousin who also had a grand prix and he told me the same thing had happened to him, but it was a company car so he never got it fixed. Does anyone have any clue what the problem is, and how expensive a job it is to fix?

Also, the steering wheel crackles alot on turns, not sure if thats just some innocent squeeks or if its something more serious I should look at.

Any help is appreciated, thanks alot. Really interested in learning about cars and how to fix them, I dont trust mechanics, but my little brothers good with cars. Im hoping he can fix these things, haha.

I have an 01 and I have a really hard time getting my car to start too. Almoast exactly how you described your problem. My bf's a GM mechanic and said w my car he thinks it doesn't realize that the key is in the ignition because my security light is on as well. I thought it was just a problem my car's wiring or something but obviously not....... interesting

yea you should've put this is the tech lounge. The moderator will probably move it, however, in the future make sure to check the right section to put your posts in to save them time. It is a hassle for them sometimes.

You should go introduce yourself in the Introduction section as well.

Not sure what your issue is with either... maybe need some power steering fluid for the steering wheel issue? Check your level. I haven't had any issues with my engine turning *knock on wood* so I don't know what it could be.

    Moved to the Tech Lounge.

Well the easiest way to start troubleshooting this is to know what we can eliminate as culprits.

    1. Lets make sure fuel pressure is good. Does you or your cousin have a way to measure fuel pressure off the schrader valve? I would check that, and get that out of the way and see if we can eliminate a fueling issue caused by a possible issue with the fuel pressure regulator or something like that.

    2. The other thing that comes to mind is a possible issue with the MAF sensor. So I would try and unplug that and see if the car starts up any easier. I dont 'think' that is the issue, but lets rule it out just the same.

Lets start there. If you will take the advice given to you in these forums (not just mine) Im pretty sure we can get this narrowed down for you. It will take time though and probably wont happen over night but everyone in this community will do all they can to help you.

Apparently this is a common problem with the drive by wire stuff in the Series III engines:
