ok, so i have never had to wash a motor.
my car has some oil caked on around the front of it above the headers and below the valve cover.
just curious if it would hurt anything to take it to the local car wash and spray it off?

because im not sure if its a leak or if it was a leak awhile back.
im not losing any oil, check regularly, and i hate driving around with smoke rolling out from under my hood.

    any suggestions would be helpful.

go get 2 cans of engine de greaser from the parts store, and then go to the car wash, spray down the whole engine, top and bottom as much as you can, follow the wait time and then spray it down.

if your all stock you CAN HOSE the whole engine down. just dont blast the alternator.

if you have a open cone, take it off and tape a bag over the TB.

ok thanks, tried looking for someone with the same issue as im having on here, but no luck.

    bone stock, so far anyways.

would it be best to wash with the motor running?
iv seen some videos on youtube where they have it running.
not sure if that would be best or not.

dont clean it while its running. let it cool off some before spraying it down with cleaner, wait 15 minutes or what ever the can says and wash it down.

then start up and let it warm back up to dry it some.

i used CRC engine degreaser, and there was like no smell when i was done, un like foamy engine brite cleaner.

and the CRC worked real good, as good if not better than foamy engine brite.

if your caked up thick around the front valve cover like you said, you may have to scrape it off some then clean it.

after its all cleaned up you know if your leaking oil or not.

mikey what issue are you having? valve cover "wheepers" are very common.

yup new v/c gaskets are in order. thats the only place oil can come from in that area.

and defiantly clean the engine first, then to the gaskets.

Most places stock the NA gaskets separately from the grommets.

For the SC gaskets they typically only come with the grommets.

The more expensive gasket looks like its for a gen 1 small block chevy.

    Not exactly what you need.

You want this: Buy Felpro Valve Cover Gasket Set VS 50080 R at Advance Auto Parts

and this: Buy Felpro Grommet Set ES 72833 at Advance Auto Parts
