Thread: sending unit need some advice !

so im going to a u pull it yard tomorrow when i wake up was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on pulling out the sending unit. its in the back of the trunk right, under that plate? is there any tricky things i need to watch out for just want to be prepared when i go tomorrow.

You have to pull the WHOLE fuel pump.

The sending unit is on the pump itself, if you want to call it that.

Its not really even a "sending unit" Its a swing arm with a float and circut board that 2 fingers run across and thus telling the PCM how much fuel is left.

I know in Bonne's ..not sure on GP's, but from 97 to 98 they changed the resistance on the senders. 97 was like 0-90ohms and 98+ was something around 0-250ohms. Apparently this kept the gauges from having quick swings etc.

Bring a flat screwdriver that can take a beating, a pair of needle nose pliers, 10mm socket/wrench/nutdriver, hammer and a pair of circlip pliers. If you don't have the cirslips..don't worry.. you can pry the clip out. There's a couple different ways the sender is held into the car.

thanks for the advice guys went to the JY today just got home about an hour ago, i found a 98 GP SE i pulled the sending unit out want hard at all but i didn't buy it because when i looked at the gas gauge it read over "F" so i didn't wanna buy it if it was broken. also because it may have not fit a 97. oh well one will turn up, gas gauge never worked since i owned the car so its no big deal to wait a little bit longer. the bright side is i got to see how to take one out so now i know for next time. other then that got some other parts for my GP and my moms car so it wasn't a waste of a ride.

To know if it would fit.. take a look on a parts site and compare the part numbers.

To know if it's good, looking at the gauge on the dash that has no power, is not really a good way. I would suggest looking at the sender. If there are 2 tabs with 3 little fingers on each, then most likely it's good. The failure that occurs is the fingers break off.

I had one in my hands the other day. Kinda wanted to take pics, needed to have her car back together in under 20 minutes for her to go to work though. Yeah..took 20 min.

Where the float attaches to the canister, there is what looks like a piece with lines on it. That's the resistor. The float has a plastic piece attached to it and there's two metal tabs that come off it. At the end of those metal tabs..there's three smaller tabs on each that ride on the resistor.
