Ok so I replaced my valve springs today with L76 springs today and the front sounded good but the back was ticking so I tore it apart again and then stripped one of the comp reusable ones because yes I half assed it and used a 6mm instead of 1/4 needles to say I stripped it like a dumb ass and tried using the stock bolt to retorque it after I got the old one out but now its ticking worse. Is there anything I can use instead like a grade 10 similar to the stock bolt style or am I just screwed and have to wait for a new set? The this time I thought it was the rockers ticking is because it did the same crap when I first put the rockers on and I just had to retorque them and it stoped. If u think it might be somthin diff please let me know. Thanks

Why do you assume that the threads in the head are still good?
If the bolt was tore up then likely the female threads are also.

    Oh! I see.

Even a grade 8 bolt would work temporarily.
Put some blue Loktite on it, Torque it to 20 ft-lb and you should be good.

Ok so its still flipin tickin is there anything else I could have done on the install of the new springs or somthin to make it tick or would it just be the rockers/pushrods? I did notice that a couple of the pushrods where scuffed pretty good and I noticed Theres like bumps that look like a metal piece inside the rocker arm where it slides over the pushrods but it wont come out or scrape out or anything and there modded rockers from zzp

you kept the push rods in the order right? like they went back where they were if you took them out. all them parts wear together and should not be mixed around after they have been mated.

a bent push rod would clap too.

    You said modded ZZP rockers?

Did you swap the piece that goes under the rocker? If you don't.. you'll have some noise and issues, because they mod the uh uh.. I forget it's name at the moment. to clearance for the pushrods being closer to the pivot point.

Yea push rods went back into the same holes I might of f'd up and flipped one but im pretty sure its all the same holes, and pedistal yes the rockers where already in it for awhile I jus started to float valves with a 3.1 pulley and put the L76 springs on it. I tried using one of the original torque to yeild bolts when the rest of them are the comp reusable ones I torqued it 23ft lbs but that might be my prob too. Any clues?

Push rods are easy...the end that went down into the lifter is always in pristine condition while the end that touches the rocker always looks like someone took a grinder to it.

You may have a couple lifters getting ready to go.

Easy way to check lifters and push-rods:
Remove valve cover and verify that there is no debris under the rockers/pedestals.
Check valve and rocker tips for wear.
    Like Bill said, correct pedestals?
    Torque the bolts to spec.
Make sure valve(the one your working on) is completely closed.
Try to lift push-rod up and down. There should be almost not play.
Try to spin push-rod. You should feel friction between push-rod and lifter/rocker.

I understand that this kind of diagnosis is quite subjective. It requires a little bit of experience.

Another thing: Run it with the valve covers off. Sometimes you can pinpoint which one(s) is/are noisy. Might get a little messy.

ok so i pulled everything off on the back and noticed that there is side to side play on two of the rockers could this cause my prob? and you do mean while torqued down feel the push rods correct? because i did that and they was all tight in the rocker and deff had fiction while tryin to spin it. i havent pulled them off yet check the tips but i got the one pushrod at a GM dealer in iowa just incase there is a prob and is there a torque sequence when all the rockers are off? is it jus go down the line or somthin like inside to out or?

Ok so I jumped in there and looked around the two rockers had side to side play and when I looked at the pushrods two had big ol scrapes in them so I replaced them retorqued everything back down switched the two rockers that had side play cuz they was on the same cylinder so I figured I coulda switched them on acident when changing the springs and im pretty sure I did cuz they was tight with no play at all after that, started it up and all is well again. But in the process found my new dd so I can quit worrying if I screw crap up, my new 87 pontiac fiero with 63,000 original miles

Good fix. Be careful next time you're messing with the valve train.
    Lucky you didn't jack something.
