Thursday a rock got kicked up and broke my windshield. Today I went and had it replaced and they didn't use a HUD compatible windshield.

It looks like **** now. It was 100% obvious as soon as I got in the car. There is horrible ghosting, and it's not nearly as sharp.

I walked back in and said "Are you sure that was HUD glass?" And they immediately said they will fix it, no arguing. They showed me the sticker off the new window that indicated it was the right part number, but saw it lacked the HUD engraving, so they knew they were taking a chance, but already had my broken window removed.

Good news is they are going to replace it free next week.

Thats what makes me wonder how people install a HUD without the proper windshield.

I've done it, while having a HUD car with the proper window in the driveway. Seems to depend on the car. I've never had an issue or really found a huge difference. Is there some, sure. That's why they make the glass.

My guess is that when you have OEM glass even if its not hud stamped it's probably pretty comparable. But as soon as you throw on an aftermarket glass it wouldnt surprise me at all to see a difference as stated above.

I installed hud in my 06 and been in an 06 with a hud windshield and could not tell the difference.

I myself can notice sometimes that non oem windshields tend to be more wavy than oem.

The cheap solution is to put a small very light patch of tint on the reflect surface on the windshield if the little extra ghosting bothers one a lot.

This is because, 4 windshields later, we find that they DO NOT MAKE AN AFTERMARKET HUD GLASS. After speaking with a GM rep, they found that the laminate layer in the HUD glass is set a special way to prevent the far side of the glass from reflecting the projection, IE no ghosting. This process is costly, and well guarded, and there are no GM approved replacement HUD windshields.

And guess what? Even the dealerships cannot order them either, because they did not make a surplus of them, so there are none left.

So I still do not have a proper looking HUD yet again. They are now attempting to locate a junkyard windshield in good condition to make it right.

Yes, the other glass "works" but the owners son has an 08 GXP so they are well aware of how crappy my HUD looks with the aftermarket glass.

Im about to install a HUD on my car this weekend (if I get time). If I dont like it, I can pull the windshield of the car I pulled the HUD from. I may do it anyway, I have a crack that bugs the chit out of me.

03 GTP...Its got pulleys and stuff.

So are yall saying you cannot get the proper hud windshield anymore? I remember threads would be made before talking about their local shops asked them which one and it was more expensive etc etc.

FWIW, when working properly, HUD is a god send. I absolutely love it, am spoiled by it, and will be very sad if my next vehicle doesn't have it.

I also admit that I use my HUD daily, I hardly look down at my cluster. I spoil myself in my ride I also have a bluetooth radio with a mic so I'm not driving with a phone glued to my ear. Then to top all that off I have a zune, ipod and phone loaded with mp3's with a remote so I never touch my radio either lol..... now that I think about it...I'm one lazy azz person. LOL I also start my car with a remote.
