The same thing happened on my 2005 GP , the spring broke(very common on this model) . I took it to carmax where I bought it and since it was still under warranty they fixed it by replacing the whole hud unit. DO you still have warranty ? If you do they should honor the repair. Also if you decide to do it yourself be careful uninstalling the dash unit around the HUD it is sensitive as an eggshell.Good Luck
Man well that does kind of suck, but if it makes you feel any better carmax damaged my dash unit and I didnt realize like 2 months after. Good thing I found the unit for $40 online . This is a link that will help if you decide to fix the hud HUD - Heads Up Display for Pontiac Grand Prix 2004 Repair Instructions . Try going to the dealership to see how much it will cost to repair.
Only one delicate thing stands between you and fixing this, that's the hud trim panel. Because it sits in the sun and it's not the most durable thing to begin with...that's your only hurdle.
A local guy brought his by and told me, "I know that panel is likely breaking, go on and fix it." Yes there was a crack in the hud panel before I started and a second one upon completion, this overall is a super easy fix.
I removed the hud, which has no wiring tricks, it's a simple plug. No craziness....simple and easy to unplug it's connector. Then unscrew or lift it out, remove screws to get into it. From there I drilled a new hole in the thicker part of the plastic, reconnected the spring and tested it out.
If you can get past the trim panel and operate a screwdriver/drill. This will be easy.
If you don't think you can handle it.. Either cruise to CT or pm Buickman104. He's in NYC
HUD display's temp? Mine only shows me gas light, speed, turn signals, high beams, and i think the check gauges lights and stuff like that it might tell me if my temp light comes on but i dont know.
Let me know if anything.
