Alright, I've been looking at transmisson coolers at autozone. They listed two different options. They have trans oil coolers and just trans coolers. So what's the difference? or are they the same? here is a link. the trans oil cooler is under "parts" and the trans cooler is under "accessoreis".

Same thing... Size is really based upon what it's needed for but a little overkill isn't bad, especially if keeping the one in the radiator functioning.

Good opportunity to whore my car out... Here's my daisy chained 16,000lbs GVW coolers ran independent of the radiator. I welded studs on the bumper support to hang them. It's way overkill and I'll be putting a t-stat on it before next winter so the fluid won't be too cold.

Are you bypassing the radiator? Hopefully your not trying to tow, right? Is the car moded or stock? Driven hard? Etc....

i would like to bypass the radiator. I'm top swapping my 97GT, and since it has the 4t60e I'm going to use a trans cooler. only difference will be a little higher compression, other than that its a stock GTP. I talked to a guy who turbocharged his monte with the same trans. Lasted over 100,000 miles with way more power then im looking at. He recommended a trans cooler.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought you really don't need this for these tranny's unless you're got a trailer attached to the GP... Heat isn't an issue with these tranny's.

Correct me if I'm wrong...? Just trying to prevent wasted money = no return...

    Heat can become an issue.

But the only way to tell is to monitor your trans temps.

If they get more than 10* higher than your ECT, you might want to consider an external.

And the biggest key to cooling is ensuring all of your duct pieces are intact and functioning correctly.

If not, you could have the biggest rad you can fit in there, and still overheat.

Good to know, I thought the GTP's were ok as they already are hooked up to the Rad/cooling no? Are the GT's different?
    Thanks

They both have tranny coolers in the rad.

But if you're running a stall or very high power levels then you're much more likely to need the help.

    Otherwise, you should be fine.

I'd just slap a 12,000GVW on her and call it a day. That's what most tranny shops here do, in fact a warranty card I had from one states that if you don't bypass the radiator and run an external cooler it voids the warranty.

    it should.

Problem with coolers without t-stats is that the fluid may not warm up enough.

Thats what combining the rad and the tranny cooler solves.

Helps warm up the tranny fluid.

Raises an interesting point: even if your engine coolant is warm, your engine oil isnt.

Even if your engine oil is, your tranny fluid isnt.

They are fairly cheap. I got mine from Autozone and it was around $160. My only complaint is that it can't data log. Other than that it's pretty badass.
