PCV valve is on top held on by plate and 2 screws, I removed and replaced valve, did not see any o-rings on it ?

There should be a gasket under that plate, I don't think it has o rings though.

Gasket was there, in good shape. Still chasing P0171 though.
Cleared the p0441 , previous owner had vacuum hoses routed wrong.
Had the vacuum port in the tb hooked directly to the vapor canister.
He then had the evap switch and soleniod hooked in a loop.

CausesA code P0171 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:

•The MAF (Mass Air Flow) Sensor is dirty or faulty. Note: The use of "oiled" air filters may cause the MAF to become dirty if the filter is over-oiled. There is also an issue with some vehicles where the MAF sensors leak the silicone potting material used to protect the circuitry.
•There could be a vacuum leak downstream of the MAF sensor.

I cleaned the MAF again today, still getting code. Previous owner did have an oiled air filter. I replaced with Fram paper filter. MAF looks new, however it has a part number sticker on it that says "Remanufactured" and I know those can be bad. No vacuum leaks that I have found yet.
Also changed fuel filter, cleaned IAC .

I would swap that remanufactured maf and see if that makes it go away.

    Do your RPMs bounce?

RPM's are fairly steady on tach when idling, some stumbling.
What would be the cheapest way to swap out the MAF , don't have another one laying around.

If you don't have a friend with a 3800, take a couple from the junkyard.

I unhooked the MAF, engine runs fairly smooth. Of course i got P0102 bad MAF signal. However the P0171 went away. Need to make it to JY to get another MAF to swap out. Does the P0171 going away mean it was the problem ? or is it just running in limp mode and the P0171 will come back even with another MAF ?

Having the vacuum straight to the canister can throw ya lean codes (your P0171).

P0171 doesn't throw if you're throwing a MAF code. There are several others, other than MAF, that will prevent the P0171 too.

For the record, the PCV valve should have an oring on the "fat" part of it, as it fits down into the goofy plastic strainer.

Also, 97s have a mess of tubes all over so make sure none of them are broken or cracked.

Ok, I did not see a plastic strainer, I have the pcv that is on top the engine held on by 2 screws and a plate holding down a spring. Does that type have a strainer ? Any idea on size of o-ring ? Don't want to pay dealer for whole kit?

No chit on a lot of tubes, i have been checking them.

Rock - I cleared the misrouting evap hoses and that cleared the p0441, down to only p0171 now.

DH is talking supercharged. But unless you lean over and look into the hole, you'll never see the strainer.

You can barely see it from below as well. See the thing in the hole

that's the strainer. Anyhow one o-ring on the bottom piece of the pcv and seal the top cover.
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

I figured he was referring to the non superchargerd because he typed "as it fits down into the goofy plastic strainer." The PCV valve doesn't fit down into anything plastic on the supercharged engines I've been into and the o ring on the PCV valve seals against aluminum. The plastic piece in the hole has always been below the pcv valve.

Yeah, but we'll cut Scott a little slack on the fits into the strainer since TMK the NA doesn't have anything in there at all.
