01 GP No Crank. Took starter out had tested...good. cables good. cleaned ground on frame. New battery. Security light not on/flasing, so it is not security. Dash lights stay on when key tuned to start. Less than 50K always garaged everything very clean. Only clue: when key turned to the on position sometimes a clicking sound , like a relay trying to latch can be heard , not from fuse center, near firewall, back of engine compartment. Any ideas

    Sounds like a dead battery.

Mine did the same thing, and the starter was in the 'engaged' position, and was stuck there, in contact with the flexplate, and wouldnt budge.

Pulled the little plastic inspection cover off, used a screwdriver to pry the starter gear back into the 'off' position...then the car started right up, and never gave me another problem.

But it does sound like a much simpler thing... Bad battery. Even though it's new, it might not have the amps to actually crank the motor over.

Test for power at the soleniod wire (one hooked up with 8mm) on the starter when you turn the key. I think you are getting it, but it's in front of the engine and your sound is coming from the wrong places.

If you get power with that...then it's either a battery/cable not supplying enough power to the starter, a locked up motor, or possibly a bad ground.

You said you checked the ground at the body. On the front lower trans stud is the main ground for the engine.

I have eliminated the battery (it is new/fully charged as was the battery from sons car I tried w same results) I took the starter off and had it tested at auto parts store.Test light shows voltage at starter. Illiminated security (had a 99 with that problem know what it looks like)

Have since found the the relay in and out repeated latching sound when key is in on position : it is coming from the Idle Air Control Valve on the throttle body. Am thinking this is a sympton rather than a cause since it should not keep motor from cranking.

When the key is turned to start there is the click from the relay in fuse box (have exchanged a known good relay) Nothing from the starter. Assume ignition switch is doing its part since relay gets start signal.

Have not considered locked motor : 45,000 miles & running fine when parked in garage ( and the starter would still kick in even if it could not turn motor) Because of the position of the starter, with the car on jack stands, and my favorite person under the car, I don't want to try shorting solenoid, in case it might jump off (or weld a scew driver to my hand)

I was not aware of a main ground stud. That might be a good lead. I will check it out. If that doesn't pan out I guess I'll have to buy a code scanner and see if that will direct me. Thanks for reply.

Try jumpstarting the solenoid.... It will rule out quite a few things.

If you can jumpstart it then you probably have a starter relay giving you issues. BTW if you do have a starter relay on that 99 (I forget when GPs started getting them), you can unplug the starter relay and jumpstart the starter from there.

Not sure if you said the soleniod wire at the starter is getting power when you turn the key. If not:

Found a mention by Scimmena about 97-03 prix's all being an external PNP switch. The external switch has a starter relay built in. Here's the wiring diagrams for both the internal and external that happened to be in a post. Take a look at the wiring for the internal and test the one that's located on top of your trans under the brake booster to see if it's getting the signal in and relaying it out to the starter

    Ok,
do not see any ground straps on bell housing. spliced into ppl wire (s from ignition on starter) and apply 12V from batt starts and runs everything works. When key turned to start there is only a single click, comes from under dash passenger side....no crank, when key is on all fuses are powered. Switched out Ign relay no change. Would suspect it must be ignition switch BUT none of the symptoms associated with switch failure or previous problems. Put on scanner and it shows no codes recorded. Wouldn't I get some code if switch failed. Have doubts it is ignition switch but what else could it be...hate to start buying parts. Only 46,000 miles

Failed ignition switch will not cause a code because it has nothing to do with the ECU.

Sounds like either a neutral safety switch or pull that positive wire off the starter and spark it against the frame it should be a big spark if its a small sparl I would say you got a bad power wire.
