lol this question maybe stupid but here goes what would happen if I put the pcm from a 97 gtp into a 97 gt would it run? Would it end up killing the motor?
|
why would you want to do that?
Lol matt I am not really sure I could get one for free if it would be a upgrade then why not but if it would just cause problems then that's stupid one thing I was thinking is it would raise my limiter which I wanna do but haven't found any one local who could tune my pcm
you understand the two motors is different right?
The trans have diff gear ratios as well.
yup.
also has different injectors and different MAP sensors, MAF tables, ignition tables.
Basically everything that tells it how much fuel and timing to run.
In otherwords, it wouldn't work well at all.
Probably run very lean and that can destroy a motor.
ok but what if I did a top swap would I then be able to run the gtp pcm or would I just need mine tuned still also if I did a top swap that means I will need to change my trans?
again I am just asking to ask wanna learn my options
also whats the most power you guys have heard coming for a 3800 series 2 not super charged?
97gt have diff. pcm, trans, and motor! topswapn a 97gt is not a gd idea cuz the trans is weak n the pcm doesnt control line press, it done by vac. 97s just suck in general, u gota do alot to mod them! btw i kno a guy who tunes, hes outa auburn hllz/sterling hts.
So you think the best bet is to keep it the way it is and just do some light mods?? Also do you know his contact info?

find bluegtp's safely modding your 3800 thread. it's in the general tech section if i remember right, i'm too lazy to look at this point. you wouldn't have to swap transmission with a top swap, the shift points, etc will be taken care of with the tune. however, the point made is correct, the vacuum controlled transmissions in the 97 se's and gt's would have trouble handling the power increase. the top swap includes changing from the heads up. the L36 motor you have now make 9.4 to 1 compression, the L67 in the GTP's makes 8.5 to 1. you would still have your high compression, and therefore NEED a tune and will not be able to drop pullies as easily as a GTP would (that's not a bad thing). also, it's hard to run a stock 3.8" pulley on a top swap without headers. another option is zzp's ssm90 kit, you can find info on their website. it uses fewer parts and a 1-belt setup
I suggest reading...its the best mod out there if you "don't know and are learning the platform"
Yea i have been studying that forum but is that modding safe to do with me having the junk tranny also why was 97 such a bad year for these cars was it because it was the first of that body style and motor?? kinda like a testing stage
97 gtp's got the same 4t65e-hd trans that all the other year gtp's got. the motor remained relatively unchanged, but 98-up se's and gt's started getting the 4t65e trans. 97 se's and gt's just have the weak, vacuum controlled transmissions. there are also some electrical differences iirc
