Thread: E85? I need facts

Hello people. I posted a similar thread on cgp and I need people who have done an e85 conversion to help me out here. I am tuning for e85 soon but this thread is purely about POWER.

I am planning to use my car as my "toy" mostly for the summer, but I would like to drive in the winter if it is necessary. I am more-so concerned with gains above everything else. So, on to my question.

Is there a solid %Percentage, or an average horsepower figure that most L67's gain while switching to E85?

I'm going to try my best to get a pre and post e-85 dyno for my setup so I we can compare numbers and find out what % I gained.

If anyone can post results in form of dyno numbers or trap speed & 1/4 mile time. I'd like to see how these 3800's are racting to e85.

You will see gains either way but it depends on how you tune it to see just how much more you can gain. 109 octane on the summer blend, cooling properties of E85 will give you plenty of power to take advantage of. It can also be very forgiving, i had a weak fuel pump, ran a 12.9 @110 on stock motor with afr's in the mid 13's most of the time, low timing on ~10 psi without knock.

Your question is kinda vague, you might have more specific questions once you make the switch but something to keep in mind is that E85 or ethanol absorbs water, I drove mine on E85 one winter and all was fine, it's when I stored it that i had some problems. I would look on clubgp tuning section for some tricks to help in colder weather or cold starts, there are a few different tables to play with as well.

It is very easy to make the switch work well with the aid of a wideband and a tuner. Understanding the blend you are getting at different times of the year will help you as well.

Thanks for the info. I'm very familliar with the qualities, pro's, cons, chemical properties, and effects of e85. The question is pretty straight forward. I just want to know how much power can be made in an l67 by switching to e85, and tuning without adding any other mods. Rather it be a measurement of percentage% or comparison of 1/4 mile times & trap speed.

Just got in touch with him. He says it's an easy 30 WHP gain if you have a good tune! Now that's what the F I'm looking for

thats what my butt dyno told me when i switched... i have also noticed a great difference in engine temp not going very high on the warmer days...

UPDATE

Just found a pcm compatible with my 97 (kind of hard to get ahold of). I'm gonna be sending it off to Dyno Brian for a mail order tune. And I should have her running on corn in a few days

I know a couple very good street tuners that I may have dial my tune in after the mail order. (If for some reason I cannot make the trip to Indiana)

BAD NEWS:
I took a trip to Dewitt service center today, and the dyno is not availible for a week or so

I wanted to run my car to get a comparison of numbers on 93 vs e85. However, I will still have my 93 tuned pcm done by Mr. Ryan C. Himself.

GOOD NEWS:
I can switch back to the 93oct tune and see the difference anytime.

E85 = poor mans race gas when used and tuned properly

Update! So my E85 mail order tune from Dyno Brian has arrived.

I've hooked it up and took it on a spin today. I had about 1/8 a tank of 93 in the car, and I put 4 gallons of e85 in. I know that this mixture is no where near what I will want for the tune, but It was enough to get the car started and going.

Obviously, no WOT pulls yet, and I have the 3.3 pulley on and will work my way down as the car runs better. The car feels like it's miss-firing under boost on a 3.3 pulley, So I'm taking it easy as the 93 octane is probably making the mixture VERY rich. I plan to run the tank completely empty, then fill back up on e85 before any WOT.

I've noticed that my gas mileage is AMAZING! Yes I said it. I'm pulling 32 MPG cruising around at 75-80 on the highway on an E-85 calibration. However, I'm sure once I start getting on it, the story will change. I'm seeing better cruise MPG on this tune than my 93 octane tune (25-27HWY MPG) and I'm only seeing 31* of timing at cruise. So whatever Brian did, I like it... So far at least.

The car feels noticeably stronger in the low RPM's scooting around town when i accelerate (and this is comparing the 3.3 pulley on E85 to the 2.8 on 93). After this tank is drained, I'm going to put 1/8 tank of e85 in and drain it again then refill and go WOT and hopefully no rich Knock or miss-fires on the 3.3. If it feels good, I'm gonna put the 2.8 see what this fuel is all about.

LOL...your supposed to go down in pulley sizes...not up. Your doin' it wrong broske...I woulda gone from the 2.8" to a 2.55"

30whp eh... Man i so wanna do this. But there's not enough e85 stations around me to do this. I drive 60 miles a day round trip and to get stranded without a e85 station wouldn't be fun. There's one literally blocks from my house but no where else on my way to work or back from work. SADFACE

I know blue! Lol. I had the 3.3 on there to be cautious b/c of the small amount of 93 still in the tank.

I've been thru about a tankand a half and the 2.8 is back on.

So the mixture is pretty much flushed of 93 octane and should be mostly E85 now. The car hauls @ss to say the very least! It's much quicker especially on the top end. I'm running a 2.8 now currently with no KR and 19.5* of timing at wot. I plan to get it dynoed soon and see where I'm sitting

I know for sure there is a lot more power to be made, but I think the tune is pretty damn good for a mail order.

I'm not gonna push for max power, but I would like to see 22* of timing KR free with a 2.8 on the street and a 2.6 or 2.55 on the track

screw timing. get it to 20* and then run more boost.

that way you can also just switch pulleys whenever you want for fast mode and for street mode. no tune changes at all.
