If the IAC is bad it won't usually start since the throttle plate is closed completely and the IAC is shut there's no air getting into the engine. When this happens you can normally get the motor started by holding the gas pedal down a bit to open the throttle plate
I get it to start by giving it gas, but it only does this when its cold. any ideas what else it could be?
its a possibility that your throttle body is loaded with cooked carbon and that it so happens to clog up the IAC and prevent it from moving, and/or the IAC decided that its time to retire (correct me if I'm wrong)...
I'm in agreement with cleaning the TB. It's a good starting point and will ensure the IAC can move freely if it's gunked up.
