I was working in the car this weekend and discovered something disturbing. For some reason I can shift the car out of park WITHOUT the key in the ignition or pressing the brake. Anyone have an idea as to why this would be? Thanks!

There is a soleniod on the shifter that gets stuck in one of two positions. You got the lucky one.
I don't have pics.. sorry.
Ive seen an 04 do that, At one time when we shifted from park something caught in the shifter assembly and actually broke not allwing it to go back to park.
I just took out all the broken parts which allow it to shift now but does the exact thing you describe, Just waiting until the snow leaves to get a replacement from the scrap yard.
Well I was sitting in the passenger side pulling wires through for the head unit install and bumped the shifter and the car started rolling. I'm just glad that there wasn't anything in front of the car. Luckily I caught it after only a couple of feet of rolling.
Is this something that I can replace just the solenoid or do I need to look for a shifter assembly to fix the issue? Does it need to be a 97 w/ sport shift as well to work properly?
My brother discovered the same thing while I was inside my house getting something... He was in passenger seat, and he was laughing about it, he thought it was hilarious. I removed the whole thing and noticed the shift release button on the top right was stuck, had to reassemble it with it correctly aligned.

Sounds like a neutral safety switch went bad. I don't remember if they ever recalled those or not.
