My SD headers just came in today and I have to pass emissions by the end of the year. Therefore, I need to keep my cat. Since the only way to do this is to weld it ( I think), how would I go about that? Can I just weld the rear headers to the cat outside of the car and then drop it all down through the hood? Or how would I go about it? I'm looking to install them on Sunday so answers are much appreciated. Thank you.

You want a 3" in and out cat. Not the stock one. then you can just clamp it in where the piece of straight pipe is after the little u bend.

That's actually what I was thinking. Where could I find a 3" in out cat for fairly cheap??

Will I pass emissions without a problem? And what difference is there between a ceramic and a metal core?

Ceramic core- The precious metal catalyst is bounded to an extruded ceramic honeycomb substrate. The ceramic has hundreds of flow channels that allow the exhaust gasses to come in contact with a maximum amount of surface area where the catalyst reaction takes place. The catalyst must come in direct contact with the exhaust gasses for the reaction to take place.
Metallic core- MagnaFlow Performance Exhaust has spun body catalytic converters utilizing the revolutionary new metallic catalyst technology. Using new manufacturing technology, Magnaflow fabricates each converter body from single CNC-formed and laster welded tubular section, which is then spun into a round converter body shape. Each converter is literally manufactured around the metallic substrate catalyst, which is securely tucked inside, and necks down to thicker gauge material at the inlet/outlet for maximum durability. The catalyst is a spirally wound ultra thin metallic foil.

they are 50 state legal converters, you might have to run a spark plug non fouler on the rear 02 if you get a cat code. Or just do it anyways while its down and not worry about it.

i cut my cat as far in as possible and welded without a problem passed emmisions with stock car and sd headers. then after hollowed out the cat but the selding caused no damage that i could see

Well if I'm putting a cat on there will my rear o2 still misread?
And welding will probably be more than that $60 cat. A good weld anyway. Plus, this is the easy way out

When you install these headers get rid of as many brackets as you can, they are useless.
Also Bolt the rear head on fully then do the front. If the front will not sit flat against the head, don't force it, you will break a header stud. Instead take the crossover pipe and trim a 1/2" at a time off the piece that connects to the rear header and a 1/2" off the front header, takes some work but eventually you will get it to sit flat and perfect.
Also get these clamps (napa sells them too btw for $11 which is cheap)

You need them for the crossover pipe the stuff they give you is junk.
Get some RTV copper gasket stuff too.
and get a new 2.5" downpipe to catback gasket...otherwise it will leak. If you've never taken it off then it will definitely need to be replaced
and If I were you, I would block off the EGR, its useless and so much better not having it there, just get a boxtune pcm and have the code deleted. Or don't its up to you.

Do they sell the clamps for $11 a piece? I was gonna get all new ones anyway lol. And what do I use the RTV on? Everything? haha

yeah Napa has them for $11 a piece, I just bought one.
RTV on all the connection slip joints. Let it set for an hour before starting the car

Also use anti-seeze on all header studs...you don't want any to snap.

How did you just use one when the crossover pipe connects in 2 places?
Oh, and the EGR, how do I go about blocking that off?

I guess zzp has everything :]. Lol. Okay, so I only need 2 of the band clamps? Can I use the clamps that came with it for everything else?

I used the C Clamps on the downpipe yes. Didn't have any leaks, but I also RTV'd the **** out of everything

I used the clamps they came with...they work great...just don't plan on taking it apart if once you get it done LOL
