My car has been acting up, as it surging and stalling. If I'm sitting at a red light and I give my car a little gas to pull up farther, it either stalls, or the rpms hit 200 then it surges way back up to about 2k rpm. When the rpm's drop it honestly feels like its flooding with gas then the rpm's go way up to correction for all the gas. I've been thinking it was a vaccuum leak for a long time, but now after I get out of the car, running or shut off it smells pretty strong of gas, like raw burnt gas. I had some code a while back that had to do with the fuel pump/regulator but I can't remember what it is. Any ideas? oh and I also don't have a rear o2 sensor in, BUT it's been like that for a long time and I never had any problems without it. But maybe a contributing factor?

The only thing that made my Monte act like that was when my MAF sensor was dying. Except mine would stall out if I let the RPM get too low, Practically pissed raw gas out the back though. Whew.

A pump from a wrecker yard should be pretty cheap and easy to install. Give it a shot.
Your problem seems way too extreme to be just a filter, injectors or dirty gas.

I would check the vac line to your fuel pressure regulator first.

The only thing the matter with deleting a rear 02 is that there is a Cat diagnostic test that can occur on 01+ if you delete your rear 02. Sometimes it doesn't matter whether it has an 02 emulator or the codes deleted. When it goes into this diagnostic, your fuel trims will rise and fall and the car may have a rough idle. The only way to fix this is to have someone with tiny tuner delete the test.

Also listen for the fuel pump to change pitch at key-on. You may want to test the voltage at the pump to see if the wiring is bad or what kind of volts you are seeing. I would just get a different fuel pump as well as a fuel pump rewire.

Easiest way to troubleshoot the Maf is to unplug it and see if the same thing occurs.

I just had a similar situation and Yes MAF and a bad coil were the culprits, My first Instinct was to also check the Fuel pump but after testing it the pressure was constant and the Millibars on Maf were low. Good luck

Well, I'm gonna replace the fuel filter tomorrow and see what happens. I've un plugged the maf, and it's kind of the same symptoms but just worse. I just hope I don't have to change the fuel pump. Speaking of which, is there trunk access to it, or do I have to drop the tank?

oh yeah, I forgot to mention that when the car is idleing theres a hiss coming from the fuel pump area, could that be the vac leak?

You should have pump access in the trunk up until a 2005.
About 8, 10mm nuts and pry off the lid. Super easy. More cars need it this way. There is no way to have a vaccum leak at the pump.
Could be any number of problems with the pump: inner filter, float, stupid rotten little plastic hose, etc. Just easier to replace the damn thing used.

Never thought of the pressure regulator, right there on the fuel rail.
    Good call.
