Would it be at all possible to swap in a DIC in place of the lower optioned open door alert? I know with most GM clusters it's all there it's a matter of plugging it in wasn't sure about these though.

You need to find a 98-02 DIC from a GT, since you have an 01. You also need the connector with a pigtail of wire on it. The new connector needs to be spliced onto the old connector, and additional wires need to be ran to the instrument cluster, the OBD plug, and the radio. Its a total of about 20 wires to splice.
It is time consuming, but it is worth it. I used some good write ups online if youre still interested.
