hello all. as we all know, this bushing is "pressed" in.
was wondering if it HAS to be pressed out, and back in, or if a person would be able to do it themselves with like a dead blow hammer or something??

You can get ones with poly bushings and a HD ball joint from the W body store for $270 a pair + shipping IIRC.
GM bushing is $25 from the dealer I believe if you really want one.

then i guess everyone has alot more F'ing money then me. the other bushing has been replaced, and if a ball joint goes bad, oh well. ill tackle that for $25
$13 for the bushing from a GM dealership. its steel on steel, by the way. no way ill be able to beat it out with a hammer
its pressed in.
control arms are cheap and worth your time.
I might be a bit late on this replay but i replaced mine and yes i had to use a press to get it out! and be carefull, make sure it comes out straight or u ruin the table/control arm and then have to buy a new one lol. the bushing was 22$ from a local autoparts store but ur better off just buying a new table/control arm it comes with the ball joint and both bushing for 125$ and no hastle of pressing out the old 1 and pressing back in the new one! was a ***** for me!
how am i better off spending $125, to only replace about $50 worth of parts?
does the arm itself just deteriorate over time or something?
you know the old saying of pay now or pay later certainly applies here. like i said before if a couple of bushings are bad there's a good chance the rest of the control arm isn't far behind. plus, you probably don't want to start mixing new and old parts together like that. it might affect handling...
weather i replace just the bushing, or the entire arm, the car should technically get an alignment afterwards either way. which would take care of any handling difference. and the point im trying to make (or question) is that control arms dont go bad. its a solid chunk of steel. unless you damage it (which would damage a new one too) theres only about $50 worth of parts on it that can go bad
what i meant by the "control arm" is the parts attached to it. bushings and ball joint. yes an alignment afterwords is a good idea. with some old parts still attached the alignment might not hold for very long. you're not saving all that much by putting new parts on an old arm. plus, from what other's have said the individual parts are a major pain to put in. it's your call if you want to hassle with putting the bushings in. it's much easier to put the whole arm in in one fell swoop....
If you are willing to do the work and save the money, I got mine out with just a chisel and hammer and installed with a hammer. Just bang them in evenly and against a block of wood or something. I replaced the ball joints and tie rods while I was at it. It's work.
With the control arm you get the ball joint as well... Something you should probably replace anyways.
Price out that bushing and new ball joints then come back and say its not worth it considering how much easier the job will be.
ok....? its not worth it.....
theres only 4 nuts/bolts holding on the control arm. from the moment i slid the jack stands under the car, i had the arm off in 30 minutes. and this was the first time ive ever done this to this car. its really not that hard to remove/install.
the ball joint ($25 part) MIGHT take 2 minutes to remove, depending on how nice of a drill you have (mines fairly nice). MAYBE 5 minutes to install and tighten the nuts/bolts on the new one
and the bushings are $13 a piece at the gm dealership. $20 to have 1 removed and reinstalled.
i could care less about how much "easier" a whole new control arm would make the job.. i have more time then money
Then by all means...
the point i was trying to make was that my experiance it took me 30 mins to get the arm off and almost an hour to press the bushing out it wouldnt freaking come out lol and when i did i bent part of the control arm around where the bushing sits. 1 month later the bushing poped out and i had to replace the whole control arm.
lol 2 mins to do a ball joint. I bet you cant get the wheel off the ground in that time.
