The sunroof on my 99 Grand Prix is making a loud noise and works half the time, sometimes it will move and sometimes it stops and won't move any further and then makes a loud noise like the motor is locked up, then it will randomly start working again, might move an inch, might open/close completely and then the next time you try to use it, it won't work??? I took the motor out and pushed the switch on while the motor was out and the gear on it turned fine both ways, that tells me that the motor is fine, and the noise seems to be coming from the sunroof itself... anyone have any ideas what this might be?

im not sure about the noises but i know when mine was doing the only working sometimes thing it eventually stopped working altogether and the prob turned out to be the position sensor

Thanks! When yours stopped working and started working at times did it not make any noise at all, mine makes a noise like it's trying to work, but can't, almost like the gears are stripped. Where's the position sensor located, and what's it cost to fix it?

also look into greasing it with lithium grease just in case its getting caught up on its self and making it work its self to hard

If you have junkyards in the area I would just get a whole assembly. Mine was making a gear noise and would only go to the up position. I picked one up at the junkyard $55 and after I removed the old one and looked closer at it found one of the cables which is similair to a worm gear was binding causing the problem. It's pretty easy to replace - 8 bolts 2 on each side. The hardest part is dropping the headliner.

Thanks guys. I did get a motor from a junk yard, but my silly a** didn't take a look at the old one first, I just assumed that it wud be a factory motor, so I get home drop the headliner and find out that who ever owned the car previously had the original (factory) sunroof motor replaced with an after market motor, and who ever they had do the work really jacked things up, it looks as tho they cut something out, and the wires are really messy, anywho, I looked the after market motor up on line and can't even find one like it, so I'm gonna leave it alone for now and work on something else that I've neglected, plus my husband gets nervous when I decide to fix things like this...lol...so I'll let him settle then I'll go at it again

    Thanks again.

Sorry, if I wasn't clear when I said "whole assembly" I meant the entire sunroof - glass - motor - guides -wiring. Just disconnect the connector to the motor and remove the (8) #10 bolts two on each side. Leave the motor in place that way you won't have to worry about adjusting it. It's not that heavy but would make things easier if you had someone to help when putting it in. I have two spare OEM motors - one from my original sunroof which is prob good and a spare I bought before going with replacing the whole sunroof - Your orig motor is prob ok if it's turning.
