Filling Up takes 20 minutes...

When I fill up my tank, with in a minute the nozzle turns off and gas has pushed back up the filler tube. If I wait a second or two, it flows down and I can continue, for another 10 seconds. Rinse and repeat. Now at this point, its not so bad, the weather is finally shaping up. But when its cold out its even worse and I've take well up to half an hour trying to fill up. I have a 14 gallon tank size. And so I'm wondering, why would it do this? Is something clogged? I know its not just the gas station because this problem persists at everyone of them. Help?

a kink in the filler neck maybe or someone could have put something in ur filler neck

I have a similar issue but it'll shut off within a second or two EVERY time, just pull it half outta the filler neck and it should fill normally.

It could also be something to do with the vacuum in the gas tank, from the evap not returning idk

This might make some sense since my EVAP solenoid clicks so loudly I thought it might have been my injectors.

I tried pulling it half out, and still the fuel backs up and the nozzle turns off.

So, how do i fix:
A) A kink in the filler neck?
B)Vacuum in the gas tank?

It's most likely a problem with the EVAP vent canister/solenoid not allowing the tank to vent correctly.

Possibility.

Also could be the check ball in the filler neck. They can get stuck and not allow fuel into he tank in a timely manner.

Also seen where people have put stuff like marbles and ball bearings into peoples tanks and they get caught in the the neck. try sticking a magnetic pick up tool down there and see if it pulls anything out.

How long do you go between fill ups? Mine does this every single time I let it get below about an eighth of a tank. It has never done it when I fill up at about a quarter.

I stuck a magnetic rod down, and didn't bring out anything.

As far as between filling up, it varies. But no matter how much gas I have in it before I start, it always backs up and turns the nozzle off.

Bringing this back from the dead. I have this issues also. I can only assume its the filler neck or I was thinking the pressure sensor if that even has anything to do with the venting of the gas tank. What did you end up finding out about this?

Mine does this too. Like That Canadian Guy said tho, pull it out about half way and it works like a champ.

I read a report, not too sure on how accurate it is but it was pretty convincing. It stated that your actually only suppose to pump gas on the lowest setting, the 1st little notch on the clicker thingy (technical term

). The stated reason for this is that when you pump gas and just hold it to the max or notch it up as high as it will go, it pumps so quickly the pressure causes the fumes to come back out and a rapid pace. Now whether or not you realize but the liquid part is not what really burns, the fumes is what the engine really burns off of. So by pumping at a fast rate your really expelling extra fuel, which is a loss in $$$, a waste of fuel, and its not good for the ozone if your all about the environment. Try it next time your at the pump, you can literally see the fumes coming out on the max setting, then notch it down... not as noticeable.
Probably not really enough to make much difference in the pocket book, but I also noticed that it doesn't take much longer pumping at a slow rate vs the max setting, but without the hassle of it clicking off over few seconds. Food for thought, may save you some money in the long run too

its the beauty of injectors.

fine mist burns better than a hose of fuel.

Sounds like it isn't venting. there is a tube attached to the filler neck that vents the air when you pump gas into your tank.

think of it like an apple juice container. if you open it and start pouring it chugs on it's way out. but if you cut a hole in it it pours smooth.

So its probably the filler neck. It's more annoying than it is harming anything. I do pull out half way but if I have learned anything in life, pulling out half way can only cause more problems down the road. lol

Back from the dead again. Got a friend that has the same problem on his 98 Daytona. I just changed the filler neck down to the rubber hose and it still does it. Doesn't matter if you pump slow, fast, nozzle in or half out. It still takes forever to fill. He drives it a lot as a DD. So it's a pain to have to fill it up every other couple of days when it takes an half hour. So any one that had this problem fix it yet?
